They're Back: 2020 Seniors Returning for Extra SeasonThey're Back: 2020 Seniors Returning for Extra Season
The 2019-20 collegiate athletic season ended abruptly due to COVID-19. Many thought their senior year was the end of their college careers. The NCAA has allowed spring seniors to come back for one more year. Some schools are encouraging it. Some schools did not offer it.

Arizona State is proud to welcome back the following for the "extra" year. The list includes local athletes with Arizona ties, international students and All-Americans. We look forward to watching this group compete at the highest level in the extra year they received.

(Note: list is as of July, as some student-athletes could change their minds and decide not to return to pursue other opportunities).

JOSEPHINE ANOKYE, WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Josephine is one of our many international student-athletes as she is from Ghana and has excelled in the 100m and 200m. She clocked the third-fastest 200-meter dash time in Sun Devil history by running 23.00 at the Desert Heat Classic and finished sixth and fourth in the 100-and 200-meter dashes, respectively, at the Pac-12 Championships.

KAYLEE ANTILL, WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Antill boasts two marks in ASU Top-10 history in the hammer throw and weight throw. The thrower is no stranger to awards and earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors the last three seasons. An Ohio native, Antill looks to build on her top-notch performance following a fifth place finish in the hammer at the Pac-12 Championships in 2019. Read about how the NCAA qualifier excells in the classroom as a landscape architecture graduate.

#ASUgrad Kaylee Antill defied many odds in the challenging landscape architecture major, earning a 4.08 GPA while being an athlete and @barretthonors scholar.

Instead of backing down, she doubled down, showing #excellence in class and in @SunDevilTFXC. https://t.co/4GojLf0GsA

KATELYN CARBALLO, WOMEN'S BEACH VOLLEYBALL
In her four years at ASU, Carballow has written her name all across the record books, as she is in the top three for career wins as an individual and in a pair (with Ellyson Lundberg). She has earned big wins for the Sand Devils over the years, including a win over the No. 10 Cal's No. 2 pair at the 2019 Pac-12 tournament to clinch the win. In 2019, she earned four wins over pairs from ranked teams. Of her four seasons, she earned the most wins in 2018 with 18.

AMANDA CARTY, WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Competed in three meets (long jump) for ASU in 2020 after transferring in from Iowa. Hailing from Spanish Town, Jamaica, Carty was an all-Big Ten honoree three times in one season at Iowa, earning two top-eight finishes in the triple jump. She advanced to the NCAA West Regional in her first and only season in Division I track and field, and was an All-American at the junior college level in 2017 and 2018. Carty won the NJCAA outdoor title in the long jump and took sixth in the triple jump in her final season at Barton County Community College in Kansas, and earned two more All-America honors during the indoor season when she took fourth in both events.

NICHOLAS CHEEMA, BASEBALL
Came back to ASU in 2019 after spending one year at Central Arizona College in 2018 and a native of Texas, the catcher will return in 2021 after seeing some action in the abbreviated 2020 season.

After four college transfers, Nick Cheema's perseverance paid off when he became an ASU baseball starter only to have it end prematurely due to COVID-19.

But, his father's cancer diagnosis in October helped him put his situation into a different context. https://t.co/z2F3TU3dfT pic.twitter.com/FMxEFUaFjE

Clayton was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week (3/2) for the second time in her career after a five-goal, seven-point performance in the 18-14 victory over Marquette (2/27). BERKELEY BONNEAU, LACROSSE
Bonneau has been the starting goaltender for the past three years at Arizona State, proving to be one of the Pac-12 Conference's toughest goalies to score on. Despite facing a high-volume of shots, Bonneau has managed to excel throughout her career in Tempe, compiling 421 saves. She has played in every game since arriving on campus, starting 43 games in net. She was off to a great start prior to the 2020 season being cut short, as her 72 saves led the Pac-12 Conference. Bonneau was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week (3/2) after finishing with 12 saves in the victory over Marquette (2/27), one of her 26 career double-digit save performances. Former collegiate goalie with Tim McCormack taking over as Head Coach of Sun Devil Lacrosse has helped Bonneau develop her all-around game. She is one of the most active goalkeepers in the country with the ability to disrupt offenses outside of her net, collecting a team-high 35 ground balls. Career: 44GP / 421SV / 16W / .443SV% / 148GB / 23CT

CARLEY ADAMS, LACROSSE
Carley Adams was in the midst of a breakout senior season with Sun Devil Lacrosse, having scored 18 goals in only eight games before the season was cut short. Coming into the season, Adams had tallied just 13 goals in her previous 33 games. She emerged thanks to the offense installed by the new coaching staff, scoring three or more goals in four games during the 2020 season. Adams put together a her best performance as a Sun Devil in the 20-5 victory over Fresno State (3/2), recording a career-high five goals and six points. She adds yet another weapon to an already talented and balanced Sun Devil attack. Career: 41GP / 31G / 8A / 39PTS / .534 SHT% / 19GB / 16DC / 8CT

AVERY HAMILL, LACROSSE
The attacker provides depth and experience to the Arizona State offense, having played in 17 career games. She has shown the ability to find the back of the net, scoring nine career goals, including a goal in the 20-5 victory over Fresno State this season. Her combination of height and athleticism make her a tough matchup for smaller defenders.

CAMPBELL POE, LACROSSE
Campbell Poe will utilize the extra year of eligibility awarded by the NCAA to return to Sun Devil Lacrosse. Poe has been with the program the past three years, providing essential depth at the goalkeeper position. Her contributions in practice are integral. testing and challenging the Sun Devil attackers. Her leadership and knowledge of the game make her a tremendous locker room presence. When called upon, Poe has shown that she is ready to play, as evidenced by a late save in the final minutes of the 2019 matchup with No. 16 USC.

DEVIN COLLINS, MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The transfer from Cal Poly Ponoma will add depth and experience to the jumps group. Collins will join a program ready for its second season -- but first full season -- under the direction of Head Coach Dion Miller.

SERI GEISLER, WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
After transferring to ASU from Valley City State, Seri Geisler set the school record in javelin in just her second meet in 2019. She competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and earned All-America (finished 16th in the javelin throw NCAA Outdoor Championships) and All-Conference (finished in second place at Pac-12 Championship) honors in 2019. Geisler earned her master's degree in Liberal Studies in May 2020.

ALEX GEORGE, MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
Did not get an opportunity to compete in 2020 after transferring to ASU from Arkansas. Originally from Gloucester, Great Britain, George earned All-America honors as a junior in cross country in 2016. That season, George won the SEC individual title and was named the SEC Runner of the Year award. He closed out his junior cross country campaign with a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

MADDI HACKBARTH, SOFTBALL
Hackbarth is a force to be reckoned at the plate and as an anchor of defensive efforts on the diamond. In 2019, Hackbarth's 19 homers was just one shy of tying the ASU all-time single-season home run record. The next year Hackbarth's big bat topped national ranks - nine dingers ranked 15th, 32 RBI ranked ninth, nine doubles ranked second. Her .835 slugging percentage ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 while her six sacrifice flies led the country. For the past two seasons Hackbarth has led the team in putouts - notching 183 in 2020 and 19 assists for a .995 field percentage.

Read about her a little more in this great story from the Columbian.

OLIVIA MEHAFFEY, WOMEN'S GOLF
Olivia Mehaffey will utilize the extra year of eligibility awarded by the NCAA to return to Sun Devil Women's Golf. Already boasting one of the most impressive resumes in program history, Mehaffey will return to Tempe to end on a high note. She recently completed her fourth season in Tempe with a historic achievement, becoming just the third four-time All-American in the history of the Arizona State Women's Golf program. She joined an exclusive list of Sun Devils to have been named All-Americans after each of their four years, one that includes Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Famer Kellee Booth (1995-98) and current LPGA Tour standout Azahara Munoz (2006-09). Despite this year being cut short, Mehaffey still managed to reach several career milestones in the process. She finished second at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge and sixth at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, pushing her career Top-10 finishes total to 20. Not only does she have 20 Top-10 finishes, she also carded 20 rounds in the 60s in her career, one of the Top-25 totals in NCAA history. Her 11 rounds at or under par this season give her 65 in her career, putting her in the Top-10 in NCAA record book. Mehaffey's 72.74 stroke average also puts her in the NCAA's Top-25 all-time. She will have the opportunity to add to these totals and move up in the NCAA career record book during her fifth and final season of eligibility.
