LEXINGTON, Ky. – Six-time All-American Cortney Jones put her name into Arizona State record book in just her first race as a Sun Devil when she ran the seventh-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in school history Friday at the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Kentucky.
In just her first race in Maroon and Gold, Jones ran an 8.28 in the short hurdles to jump to seventh in school history and into the top-20 in the nation. The time got her third overall in the prelim and sent her to the next round with her teammate Jeminise Parris who finished 17th overall.
Jones wasn't the only Devil who earned a spot in the ASU top-10 as Josephine Anokye and Katie Eidem both put up historic marks in their respective events.
Eidem started the day for the Devils with a top-five performance in the pentathlon. It was her first full pentathlon, and she closed the five-event contest by winning the 800 in 2:22.29. Her 3,523 points put her at fourth all-time.
Anokye was one of the last Sun Devils to compete Friday, and her 23.99 in the 200-meter dash slotted her at ninth in ASU history and gave her the sixth-place finish in the event.
Three men advanced to the semifinal in the 60-meter dash with newcomer Antonio Mitchell leading the way. Mitchell, Jalen Drayden and Marcus Reaves all qualified on time, then Mitchell came back later in the day to take 10th in the 200.
The women's pole vault saw three Sun Devils finish in the top-10, this time with freshman and Arizona State champion Sevanna Hanson taking the highest spot with a clearance of 3.90m/12-9.5 feet. Myka Steinbeisser also cleared the same mark and came one place behind Hanson in fifth.
Friday's historic day makes way for more chances at history Saturday as Jones takes the track again for the 60-meter hurdles semifinal.
Those who advanced to Saturday semifinals will compete for places in afternoon finals, and a handful of Sun Devils will open their weekend, including Cole Riddle in the men's pole vault, Bianca Tinoco in the women's 800, and Arius Williams in the women's 400.
