Coach Bobby Hurley's non-conference schedule -- always a solid positive topic in college basketball circles -- will have some local ties the next two seasons as the Sun Devils will travel across the Valley of the Sun to take on Grand Canyon on Sunday, Dec. 13, and then GCU will return the game to Desert Financial Arena in December of 2021.

"We look forward to starting a series at Grand Canyon this season," says Sun Devil head coach Bobby Hurley, who has led ASU to three straight 20-win seasons and enters his sixth year at ASU in 2020-21. "Bryce Drew and his family are well-known in the college basketball world and as we welcome them to the Valley, it made sense to have an efficient home-and-home with his program."

ASU is scheduled to travel to Creighton this season after hosting the Bluejays this past season and has announced San Diego State will visit Desert Financial Arena on Dec. 10. The Sun Devils also are playing in the Diamond Head Collegiate Dec. 23-26 in Honolulu, and will play BYU on Dec. 19 at Talking Stick Resort in downtown Phoenix in the Jerry Colangelo Classic.

Ticket information, game times and additional television broadcast details and will be released at a later date. As the health and safety of the athletes, fans and staff is of the utmost importance, ASU and GCU will continue to follow public health recommendations regarding the COVID-19 situation in the coming months and will provide updates should changes occur.

ASU opened GCU's current arena in an exhibition game on Nov. 5, 2011.

QUOTING SUN DEVILS AND ANTELOPES
"We are thrilled for the opportunity to play a series with Arizona State. Bobby has built one of the better programs in the country, and this will be a series that the Phoenix area will be very excited for." -- GCU first-year Head Coach Bryce Drew.

"This is a great opportunity for two local programs with history of success in collegiate basketball to finally meet on the court, We hope it is the beginning of a new spirited rivalry between universities who have long contributed to the culture of the Valley, now in a new and entertaining way." -- Arizona State President Michael Crow.

"Congratulations to Coach Hurley and to Coach Drew for getting this set up. This is going to be a great event for the two universities, their students, alumni and fan bases. It will be a fantastic way to showcase college basketball in the Valley." -- GCU President Brian Mueller.

OOC ROAD GAME NOTE: ASU is 7-2 (.778) in out-of-conference road games under Bobby Hurley, after going 8-22 (.267) in its previous 30 efforts and has played in those games in eight states.

20: While the creation of exempt tournaments and more games has given teams a better chance to reach 20 wins, we won't take for granted what ASU has done under Bobby Hurley. Coming off records in of 23-11 in 2018-19 and 20-12 in 2017-18, ASU notched its third straight 20-win season in 2019-20, something it has done just twice prior. In James Harden's two seasons ASU went 21-13 (2007-08) and 25-10 (2008-09) and then went 22-11 in 2009-10. You have to go back to 1960-63 for the only other time in ASU history for it to happen, as ASU went 23-6 in 1960-61, 23-4 in 1961-62 and 26-3 in 1962-63, led by another Olympic gold medalist, Jumpin' Joe Caldwell.
