LOS ANGELES – Kate Baldwin and Lexi Sweeney went undefeated as a pair while Arizona State beach volleyball split its matches on the first day of the Pac-12 South Tournament on Saturday, falling to No. 2 UCLA and beating Utah.
Arizona State (4-4, 1-3 Pac-12) swept Utah 5-0 after losing to No. 2 UCLA 4-1. The duo of Baldwin and Sweeney won both of their matches today at the No. 5 spot. Both wins were in two sets. Baldwin earned career win 50 against the Utes. She is the fifth Sand Devil in program history to reach that milestone.
Freshman Matea Suan made her collegiate debut against UCLA. She went 1-1 on the day with Allyson Eylers.
Game One – No. 2 UCLA 4, Arizona State 1
Baldwin and Sweeney got the lone point for the Sun Devils in the loss to the Bruins. The first wave of the match featured courts two and four. UCLA took the second court in straight sets, but ASU made things interesting on court four. Lundberg and Salazar won the opening set in extras, 27-25, but dropped the next two sets. In the second wave, UCLA won on courts one and three, but the fives Baldwin and Sweeney took care of business, winning in straight sets.
