Clayton Reaches 100 Goal Milestone in Lacrosse's Win over Fresno StateClayton Reaches 100 Goal Milestone in Lacrosse's Win over Fresno State
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team cruised to a 20-5 victory over Fresno State on Monday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.

A masterful defensive performance and outstanding goalkeeping neutralized the Bulldog attack, while 12 different Sun Devil scored a goal in another balanced effort for the offense. Coming off her Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week selection, goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau looked sharp from the start, preventing the visitors from scoring until the 14-minute mark of the first half. An active and engaged defensive effort forced Fresno State to commit 23 turnovers, with eight of those caused by the Maroon & Gold.

"The defense was disciplined and controlled," Coach McCormack remarked. "We didn't give up those eight-meters that we have been giving up. Berkeley (Bonneau) and Lindsey (Spies) were phenomenal in the cage for us as well."

The offense kept on rolling this afternoon, scoring at least 18 goals for the third consecutive game and fourth time overall this season. Pacing the attack once again was the dynamic duo of Kerri Clayton and Emily Glagolev. The pair continues to terrorize opposing defenses, each finishing with seven points on the day. Clayton scored three goals, becoming the first Sun Devil to surpass the 100-career goal mark. With the majority of the attention paid to her, Clayton did not hesitate to get her teammates involved, matching a career-high with four assists. Emily Glagolev tied her own single-game school record, dishing out six assists as the main facilitator of the offense. Carley Adams had a breakout performance, setting a new career-high finishing with five goals.

Several young players earned valuable playing time this afternoon and managed to contribute off the bench. Brittany Chamberlain fought for a ground ball and charged the cage, registering her first goal as a Sun Devil. Kate Gauntlett beat her defender and found a cutting Kate Dougherty, recording her first collegiate assist. Avery Hamill crashed the net and found herself open for her first goal of the season. Emma Carlson found the back of the net for the second time this season, starting a 4-0 run in the second half helping Arizona State pull away.

"Depth is always a nice thing," Coach McCormack mentioned. "We were very confident in putting those individuals in and they knew exactly what they were going to do. They went out there and executed, which is great for them."

Arizona State won the battle of the draw controls yet again, thanks to an improved second half effort. ASU boasted a 10-5 advantage in the draw circle over the final 30 minutes, a testament to the increased focus and attention paid to that area. For the second consecutive game, Kerri Clayton earned four draw controls. Emily Glagolev matched Clayton's total, while Kaylon Buckner recorded three in a total team effort.

"We are getting better every day at it," Coach McCormack observed in reference to draw circle. "Sometimes it can be personnel related, figuring out what three-man unit is best together. We have buckled down on some of those individuals and they are making it work out there."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Anna Winkeler made sure her team got off to a good start, scoring a goal just 28 seconds into the game on the Sun Devils' first possession.
  • Less than a minute later, Emily Glagolev found Maddy Hunter to put ASU up 2-0 less than two minutes into the game.
  • Kaylon Buckner would cap off a 3-0 run to start the game with a goal of her own.
  • It would take almost 14 minutes of game time for Fresno State to get on the board, as Berkeley Bonneau and the Arizona State defense came to play.
  • The Maroon & Gold had another 3-0 run in them, taking a 6-1 lead with 8:43 left in the half.
    • Kerri Clayton received a feed from Carley Adams and did what she does best, scoring the first goal of the run.
    • Clayton reached a significant milestone on her second goal, as it represented the 100th of her Sun Devil career.
    • Carley Adams got on the board, the start to a big day for the senior.
  • A rare first half goal by the Bulldogs cut the lead to 6-2, but the Sun Devils would shut them out for the final 8:40 of the half.
  • Meanwhile, Arizona State's offense got to work, scoring the final two goals of the half. Kerri Clayton assisted on both scores, the first coming from Carley Adams followed by Emily Glagolev, giving ASU an 8-2 halftime lead.
  • The defense continued to dominate the Bulldogs' attack, holding them scoreless for the first ten minutes of the second half.
  • During that time, Arizona State went on a 4-0 run to push their lead to 12-2 and create some separation.
    • Katie Brodsky continued her productive start to 2020, finishing off a feed from Emily Glagolev.
    • After Kerri Clayton registered yet another hat trick, Carley Adams scored back-to-back goals, the second of which was assisted by Clayton.
  • Coach McCormack's side had a loud response to a pair of Fresno State goals which cut the deficit to eight. ASU answered with four consecutive goals, putting the game out of reach.
    • Katie Brodsky and Emily Glagolev teamed up for the second time, with Brodsky registering yet another multi-goal game.
    • The offense was coming from different sources all night, with several young players stepping up.
"It was huge," Coach McCormack emphasized when asked about getting young players live game action. "You can't coach experience and they were out there making plays in big situations when it is on the line. Those are moments that you can't coach. To have that in their back pockets is going to be huge moving forward."
  • Emma Carlson was part of that group, scoring her second goal of the season.
  • Carley Adams added one for good measure, giving her a career-high five goals.
  • Avery Hamill managed to get on the board for the first time this season, putting the Sun Devils up 16-4 and ensuring a running clock.
  • A late spark by Taylor Carson gave Arizona State more cushion, as she scored two goals in a three-minute span. That was part of a 4-0 Sun Devil run to finish the game, as the Maroon & Gold fought until the final whistle, sealing a 20-5 victory.
  • Two individuals enjoyed collegiate-firsts in the final moments, with Brittany Chamberlain scoring her first goal as a Sun Devil while Kate Gauntlett dished out her first-career assist on a Kate Dougherty goal.
