TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 18 Sun Devil women's tennis rolled to their third-straight victory Tuesday afternoon at Whiteman Tennis Center, defeating Marquette 5-2 to finish non-conference play.
In doubles and singles, the Sun Devils wasted no time getting up on the Golden Eagles and never looking back.
"It was a good match for us. It's spring break so mid-week isn't something we normally do," said associate head coach Matt Langley. "We came out ready and prepared from the first point, and we took care of business in doubles. We got up early on all three courts so never felt threatened, which was important for us.
"We managed to close it out – a couple of times in doubles we've had some difficulty closing out sets quickly – and today we were able to do that. It's something we've talked about when getting up, trying to close teams out and carry momentum to the next court or into singles."
No. 46 Tereza Kolarova and Ilze Hattingh finished up on court one, 6-3, and were quickly followed by Savannah Slaysman and Sammi Hampton taking court two, 6-2, to make quick work of doubles.
That momentum, as coach Langley referred to, carried right over into singles.
Slaysman, ranked No. 120 in singles, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win on court four – just her fourth time this season playing up on court four and now boasts a 3-1 record with her second-straight victory.
Minutes later, Hattingh – No. 40 in the singles rankings – fought off a hot second-set start by Fleur Eggink, winning her match 6-3, 6-2. It was her third-straight win and fifth in her last six.
On the court next door, No. 94 Hampton clinched the match point with a game tiebreak in set two, 7-6 (4) after winning the first set 6-0. Hampton has now won seven of her last eight. She's had four 6-0 set victories in her last six.
"From a singles standpoint, I think individually we improved in some areas, even from the Oregon match which we won quite handedly," said Langley. "A few of the girls played better today than they did up in Oregon, so hopefully we can carry the good momentum into the weekend of Pac-12 play."
The final matches were played out with Lauryn John-Baptiste winning her match on court five, 6-3, 6-3. Kolarova retired from her match on court three, but was up 7-5, 4-3. Marquette earned their second point of the match as Lesley Foe bounced back from a first-set loss to Sasa Klanecek to win 6-3, 1-0 (13) in the final two sets.
The Sun Devils hit the road for a two-match road trip at Colorado and Utah on Friday and Sunday, respectively. They won't return to Whiteman until March 27 as they take on California.
