LOS ANGELES – Despite a 22-point effort from Remy Martin, the Sun Devil men's basketball team fell at USC 71-61 on Saturday.
The Sun Devils (19-10, 10-6 Pac-12) managed to shoot just 33 percent for the game, including 24 percent (7-29) from beyond the arc. In contrast to ASU's offensive struggles, the Trojans (21-9, 10-7), connected on 50 percent of their shots. USC made 45 percent (9-22) of its 3-pointers with most of its long range success coming in the first half.
Rob Edwards scored 10 points and had a game-high four steals while Romello White just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
After trailing by as many as 13 in the first half, the Sun Devils fought back to get within five points at the half, 41-36. Martin (10 points), Edwards (seven points) and White (six points) combined for 23 of ASU's first-half points. Although the Trojans connected on 64 percent (7-11) of their attempts from long range in the first 20 minutes, ASU was able to back into the game by making nine free throws and scoring 14 points off of USC's 14 turnovers.
USC ran its lead back up to 12, 54-42, after Nick Rakocevic's 3-pointer with just under 13 minutes remaining.
Four different Sun Devils –White (two points), Alonzo Verge Jr. (two points), Martin (four points) and Taeshon Cherry (three points) – contributed to an 11-0 run that got ASU back within a single point, 54-53, after Martin's layup with 8:49 left.
USC came back with the next six points to extend the lead back to seven. From that point the Sun Devils were not able to pull any closer than five points for the remainder of the game.
The Sun Devils conclude regular season action next week when they host Washington (Thursday at 7 p.m. MST) and Washington State (Saturday at 4:30 p.m.). On Saturday, the Sun Devil men's basketball program will be recognizing seniors Rob Edwards, Grant Fogerty and Mickey Mitchell, who will be playing in their final home game for the Sun Devils.
