WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore goaltender Evan DeBrouwer posted a 28-save shutout Saturday night as No. 9/11 Sun Devil Hockey shutout Bentley, 3-0, for their fifth-straight victory and second-straight, 20-win season.
DeBrouwer's shutout was his third of the season and the Sun Devils (20-9-3) netted a goal in each period to end the Falcons' (13-14-3) five-game winning streak.
"You take wins any way you can get them," said head coach Greg Powers. "I didn't like the first at all for obvious reasons – we came out a little flat again – but our guys are tired and we know that. We've put together a really long stretch of games without a break, so our biggest focus going into the next set of games is to make sure our guys are fresh and rested."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Eight minutes into the 1st period, the Sun Devils were on the side of a fortuitous bounce. As redshirt sophomore Austin Lemieux battled for a puck behind the net, the puck bounced out to junior forward Filips Buncis right in front who punched it in before Bentley goaltender Aidan Pelino even saw it.
-After going into the 2nd period with a 1-0 lead for the second-straight night, the Devils didn't let this lead slip away as senior forward Brett Gruber wristed one off the post and by Pelino to make it 2-0 late in the middle frame.
-In the waning seconds, and Bentley with an extra attacker on the ice, Gruber won the draw in the defensive zone and defenseman Brinson Pasichnuk fired the puck into Bentley's empty net.
GAME FACTS:
-The Sun Devils reach 20 wins for the second-straight year, and are one of just three total teams to have 20 wins at this point in the season.
-ASU has won five-straight and 10 of their last 12 with both losses being by one goal.
-ASU is 14-1-1 against the Atlantic Hockey conference in their last 16 games.
-With his empty-net goal, Brinson Pasichnuk reaches 99 points in his ASU career and is one point shy of becoming the first Sun Devil to 100 points in program history.
-Senior Brett Gruber recorded a goal and an assist for his third multi-point game of the season – all coming against Atlantic Hockey opponents.
-Redshirt sophomore Austin Lemieux also had a multi-point night with two assists for his fourth multi-point game of the season.
-Junior forward Filips Buncis netted his fourth goal of the season and third multi-point game of the season. It was his first goal since recording a goal and an assist vs. Brown on Jan. 11.
-The Sun Devil penalty kill has negated the last 32 opposing power play opportunities dating back to Jan. 5 vs. Michigan Tech.
