FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Emma Nordin dominated the 500 freestyle tonight, notching several accolades in one swim – including a Pac-12 crown – this evening at the 2020 Pac-12 Championships. Her time of 4:33.74 secured her a conference championship, NCAA "A"cut, the Arizona State record as well as the fastest time in the nation in the event.
"Today was the best prelim session we have had since I've been at ASU, and we followed it up with an outstanding finals," head swimming coach Bob Bowman said. "Emma Nordin showed real grit in winning the 500 for her first Pac-12 Championship while posting the fastest time in the nation this year."
Nordin began the morning session with a first-place finish in the preliminary round, combining with teammates Erica Laning and Cierra Runge go to 1-2-3 in the prelim. All three women moved on to the A Final to race for a title, but it was Nordin who came out on top. Runge joined her on the podium in the finals session with a third place finish while Laning placed seventh.
"Cierra is also in the top five so we can be very competitive in this event at NCAAs," Bowman said. "Across the board today we had personal best and quality racing. Tomorrow morning will be a critical session for us to keep the momentum going."
The 200 IM was next, with several Sun Devil women competing in the finals session this evening including Nora Deleske, who raced to an A Final appearance. Chloe Isleta joined her in the evening session in the B Final while freshmen Jade Foelske and Lizzy Spears raced in the C Final. Deleske scored 22 points in eighth place while Isleta contributed 12 in 15th place. Foelske and Spears rounded out the effort in 17th and 20th place, respectively.
Camryn Curry represented the Sun Devil women in the last individual event, as she took home 7th place in the preliminary round of the 50 free to secure her spot in the A Final. Curry took the block in the evening session, touching the wall at 22.25 for sixth place and 24 points for the Sun Devils.
In the final event of the evening, ASU sent Curry, Laning, Lindsay Looney and Foelske to the block for the 200 free relay, placing sixth to round out day two's action.
Over in the diving well, Youssef Selim competed in the three-meter board today. Selim punched his ticket to the finals with his eighth-place finish in the prelims, scoring 337.55. He came back and improved in the finals, placing fourth with a score of 387.85 to fall just shy of the podium.
"Youssef had five really good dives and one poor dive which took him out of the running for podium," head diving coach Mark Bradshaw said.
The Sun Devils are back in action tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. MST for the preliminary rounds of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and men's platform. Fans can keep up with the action by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
