FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – No. 17 Sun Devil women's swimming knocked down a school record while Youssef Selim took home second place in the one-meter springboard to highlight day one of the 2020 Pac-12 Championships. Emma Nordin, Erica Laning, Lindsay Looney and Cierra Runge combined to break the previous record.

"Tonight was a good start to our meet," head swim coach Bob Bowman said. "The 800 free relay was an ASU record and we should be very competitive in that race at the NCAAs."

Nordin, Laning, Looney and Runge got the Sun Devils off to a hot start in the evening session, racing to a school-record setting time of 6:58.09 in the 800 free relay to beat the 2019 mark by less than one second. The time also secured an "A" cut for the women, their first of the season, and fourth place overall.

Selim competed in the one-meter preliminary round earlier this afternoon. He placed second with a score of 373.75 to move onto the final round this evening. Selim entered the finals looking to defend his back-to-back conference championships in the event.

"Through the prelims and finals Youssef was very consistent," head diving coach Mark Bradshaw said. "Unfortunately the issue for him was that he wasn't clean enough on his entries on a day that the judges were willing to score high on clean entries. He did wonderful dives, they just were not crisp on the bottom when they needed to be to win."

He stepped up to the springboard this evening and found himself in the middle of the pack halfway through the six dives. With two of his more difficult dives ahead of him, Selim sat in third place with one dive left and was able to score enough to move up to a second-place finish with a final score of 380.25.

"There was a protest from the diver right before Youssef late in the event that distracted him because as he was preparing to do his dive, he had to come down from the board to allow that diver to retry," Bradshaw said. "The judges determined that the difference in that diver's original and second dive still placed him above Youssef, but the bottom line is that he's being consistent. He just needs to clean up his entries."

In the final event of day one, Chloe Isleta, Silja Kansakoski, Jade Foelske and Camryn Curry took the block for the 400 medley relay. The foursome again took fourth place in the event, racing to a time of 3:33.76 that tied for the fourth-fastest time in Arizona State history. The mark also secured them a "B" cut in the event.

"Our medley has some room for improvement, but we had a great performance from freshman Jade Foelske," Bowman said. "We're excited about the event program tomorrow!"

Through day one, the Sun Devil women sit in fourth place with 104 points. They are behind first place Cal and USC (120 points) and Stanford (108 points).

Day two's action kicks off at 11:30 a.m. MST with the preliminary rounds of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 500 free and men's three meter springboard. The finals are set to begin at 7 p.m. MST, and fans can stream the finals at pac-12.com/live.
