GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The No. 2 Sun Devil Women's Golf team completed the first round of the 2020 IJGA Collegiate Invitational, Sunday afternoon at Guadalajara Country Club.
Arizona State (+4/292) ended their round on a high note by recording a combined five birdies over the final three holes. Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team finds themselves in sixth place and within striking distance after day one, only four strokes out of fourth and seven strokes out of the tournament lead.
Competitors prepare for a long day, as they will complete a total of 27 holes tomorrow. The first nine holes of the third round will take place immediately following the conclusion of the 18-hole second round.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
"We had a bit of an up and down day today but finished strong," Coach Farr-Kaye observed. "We are only 7 shots out of first place. We want to make a few more putts tomorrow and we will be back in the race."
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Two Sun Devils currently sit in the Top-25, with Alessandra Fanali leading the way by ending the day just outside the Top-10. The sophomore continues her strong play as of late, shooting a 71 (-1) to earn a tie for 11th. Fanali excelled on par three holes, going one under on such opportunities, tied for the second-best score of the first round. She made very few mistakes on the golf course, carding only two bogeys the entire round.
Olivia Mehaffey joins Fanali in the Top-25 after day one, as the senior shot a 73 (+1), good enough to earn a tie for 24th. Mehaffey did her best work on par five opportunities, tying for the third lowest score on such chances at two under.
Alexandra Forsterling and Linn Grant (+2/74) sit right behind Mehaffey in a tie for 31st, as both showed flashes of brilliance in their rounds. Forsterling started the day with back-to-back birdies and ended in similar fashion, birdieing two of her final three holes, giving her confidence heading into tomorrow. Forsterling's two-under finish on par five holes was tied for the third-best in the field. Linn Grant nearly completed a mistake-free back nine, with only one bogey, which she made up for with a birdie on her final hole.
Playing as the individual, freshman Amanda Linner finished her round strong. The sixth member of the Sun Devil lineup birdied her final hole, building momentum heading into the second round.
