BERKELEY, Calif. – Behind a pair of 22-point efforts from Remy Martin and Alonzo Verge Jr., the Sun Devil men's basketball team defeated Cal 80-75 on Sunday, giving the program its first five-game winning streak in conference play since February of 2009.
Romello White (10 points, 10 rebounds) had his eighth double-double of the season for the Sun Devils (17-8, 8-4 Pac-12), who currently sit in a three-way tie for second-place in the Pac-12 with No. 17 Oregon (17-6, 8-4) and Arizona (18-7, 8-4). All three teams trail No. 16 Colorado (20-6, 9-4) by half a game. Oregon visits Tempe on Thursday night.
The Sun Devils doubled up the Bears (10-15, 4-8) in second chance points (10-5) and had more than three times as many points off turnovers (14-4).
Martin (seven points), Verge (six points) and Rob Edwards (six points) combined for 19 of ASU's 32 points in the first half. Edwards' 3-pointer with seven minutes remaining in the half gave ASU a 24-17 lead, the largest lead enjoyed by either team in the half.
A 9-2 run by Cal knotted the scored at 26-26. Neither team led by more than four points the remainder of the half as the Sun Devils took a 32-31 lead into the locker room.

Martin was 5-of-7, including 2-of-2 from downtown, while Verge was nearly perfect from the free throw line, hitting 10 of his 11 attempts. Two of those free throws gave ASU its largest lead, 48-39, with 12:36 remaining. Cal responded by scoring 10 of the game's next 12 points to trim ASU's lead to a single point, 50-49.
The game was tight for the next several minutes until a 3-pointer by Martin started a 6-0 run for ASU that put it up 66-58 after Jalen Graham's jumper with 4:27 remaining. The Bears did not seriously threaten until getting within three late in the game, but Verge would knock down two free throws at the opposite end to seal the win, ASU's seventh in its last eight games.
