TEMPE – Tereza Kolarova lifted the 14th-ranked Sun Devil women's tennis team to 6-0 on the season when she clinched Arizona State's win over the UNLV Rebels Sunday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Devils' 4-0 sweep of the Rebels started by taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
"UNLV came out and played aggressive today, and we had to play well to get out ahead in doubles," coach Sheila McInerney said. "We gained some momentum from there and we realized it was going to be a battle in the singles matches."
Savannah Slaysman and Cali Jankowski won 6-3 on the second court, and Sasa Klanecek and Sammi Hampton finished their 6-4 win shortly after. The Devils found themselves down big on court one, but Hattingh/Kolarova stormed back to tie things up 5-5 before the point was clinched.
ASU managed to wrap up the match quickly once singles play started as they would win in straight sets on courts one, three and five.
The senior All-American Hattingh dropped only one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 sweep on court one. Cali Jankowski got her first sweep since the first match of the season when she claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win on five.
"Our girls came out and played really well in singles," McInerney said. "Ilze, Terka and Cali really took care of business, and it was nice to see Cali have a really good match. She's still coming back from being away from tennis for more than a year and she's making good progress on the court."
Kolarova sent the fans at Whiteman home soon after when she finished her court three match 6-2, 6-4.
Next up for the unbeaten Sun Devils is a trip to Chicagoland for the ITA Indoor National Championships. ASU will be one of 14 teams who won their respective regionals, and the hosts Illinois, participating in the tournament.
"It'll be fun up there," McInerney said. "We're going to have a great weekend of three really tough matches, and we'll find out who we play first coming up on Tuesday."
