TEMPE – No. 14 Arizona State moved to 5-0 Friday when it defeated San Diego 5-2 at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Sun Devils won on courts two and three to take the doubles point and get off to an early lead on the Toreros. Cali Jankowski and Savannah Slaysman won their third match of the season, and Sammi Hampton and Sasa Klanecek back into the win column to give the Devils an advantage heading into singles.
"We were coming off of a tough trip last week so it was important for us to get ahead early to kind of settle down a bit," associate head coach Matt Langley said. "The doubles point set the tone and it really carried over nicely to those top-three courts."
Kolarova would continue the success into singles play, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court three to put the Devils up 2-0 quickly.
The senior Sammi Hampton made it 3-0 with her win on court two, and Ilze Hattingh clinched the Devils' fifth-straight win on court one before the Devils conceded to the Toreros on court five.
ASU would go on to win court six after Savannah Slaysman's opponent retired while the Sun Devil senior was up 7-5, 4-3 in the second set.
"San Diego is a good team," Langley said. "They're a top-40 team, they were a tournament team a year ago, so we knew it would be a challenge coming in. It was a good win for us today, and we want to keep that going on Sunday."
San Diego got another win, but the Devils had already secured the match win and will head into Sunday's match with their best record since they started 7-0 to start the 2008 campaign.
The Devils will take on the UNLV Rebels Sunday at noon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
