STANFORD, Calif. – The sixth-seeded Arizona State Water Polo team jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back as it defeated seventh-seeded Indiana, 16-6, in day 2 at the MPSF Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Maud Koopman made history with her hat trick, as she moved up to third all-time in career goals scored (177 goals) passing former Sun Devil Alkistis Benekou.
ASU built a strong lead right out of the gate, scoring three straight goals with back-to-back goals coming off the hand of sophomore Amira Van Buren to give the Devils the 3-0 advantage. The two goals mark Van Buren's sixth multi-goal game of the season.
Junior Bente Rogge filled up the stat sheet in dominant fashion against the Hoosiers, especially in the second period. Rogge supplied four goals in the eight-minute stretch to provide the Sun Devils with a comfortable 9-2 lead at the half. Her four goals are just the third time this season scoring four or more goals.
P.J. Allin, Julia Reyes, Borbala Kekesi and Catherine Simko scored on goal each in the second half to put the game out of reach for the Hoosiers.
Attacker Lieke Rogge was also a bright spot, as she scored three-straight goals for the second three-goal performance of her freshman campaign.
Goalie Bridget Johnston put up a dominant effort in the victory, securing seven saves on the afternoon, while only allowing six goals.
The Sun Devils finish their run at the MPSF Championships tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. against fifth-seeded San Jose State in the fifth-place matchup. Fans can follow the action live via live stream by subscribing at http://www.mpsports.org/watch/ or via live stats at TheFosh.net.
