TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 10 Arizona State water polo team will gear up to take the road to face its second-consecutive Top Five conference opponent this Saturday, April 20, as the Sun Devils travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face No. 4 California at 2 pm PT/MST.
ASU (12-10) will make its first national television appearance live on Pac-12 networks from Spieker Aquatics Complex. Live stats will also be provided for the match through thefrosh.net. This week's contest will wrap up MPSF play for the season before postseason play begins next week in Stanford, California.
Last Saturday, the Sun Devils faced national powerhouse No. 3 USC (22-1) for the second time this season. From the start, ASU found itself trying to claw its way back after trailing 5-1 after one period of play. Bente Rogge, Maud Koopman and Amira Van Buren finished with one goal apiece for the Sun Devil offensive attack, as ASU wasn't able to gain momentum through the course of the game, falling 17-3. Tough competition is a regular in the MPSF, as the Devils will turn to look for an upset over No. 4 Cal. ASU sits in a similar position from two years ago when the Sun Devils beat the No. 4 Golden Bears, 7-6, in 2017.
Rogge scored her 40th goal of the season this past weekend, making her the second Sun Devil to eclipse the 40-goal mark this season. Rogge joins Koopman, who leads the squad with 47 goals scored. Rogge and Koopman became the first set of teammates this past Saturday to score 40 or more goals in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this season. The pair also sits 6th (Koopman) and 10th (Rogge) among MPSF top scorers.
No. 4 Cal (14-6) is coming off its second conference win of the season against Indiana last Sunday. The Golden Bears hold three victories over Top-Five opponents throughout the season, with wins against No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Hawaii twice.
Following the trip, ASU will prepare for MPSF Championship competition in Stanford, California beginning Friday, April 26 to Sunday, April 28. The MPSF Championship tournament will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks.
