TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 2 Stanford took an early lead and despite the No. 9 Sun Devils tying things up midway through the contest, ASU fell to the visiting Cardinal, 10-7, in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) opener.
Stanford scored the first three goals of the contest before ASU tied it up, 3-3, with 3:20 left in the second quarter. P.J. Allin scored with 54 seconds left in the first quarter before Bente Rogge and Maud Koopman scored within an hour of each other in the second quarter.
Just after halftime, Stanford regained the lead but Koopman scored her second goal of the game two minutes later to once again tie things, 4-4.
The Devils would tie things up two more times, 6-6, by the 1:13 mark of the third quarter on goals by Amira Van Buren and a third by Koopman. But Stanford would score three straight to take a 9-6 lead and, despite Borbala Kekesi scoring with 2:56 left in the contest, Stanford would add a final goal 30 seconds later to win, 10-7.
In goal, Bridget Johnston made five saves in a full contest for the Sun Devils.
Next weekend, the Sun Devils continue MPSF play at home vs. Indiana on Friday, Mar. 15 (12 pm MT) and vs. UCLA on Saturday, Mar. 16 (11:30 am MT). ASU also hosts a neutral site contest between UCLA and Indiana on Saturday at 3 pm MT.
