PHOENIX – Sun Devil Baseball's Hunter Bishop has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, as announced by the league office today, following a monster week at the plate to help keep Arizona State undefeated on the season at 15-0.
Bishop's selection is the first conference Player of the Week honor of his career and marks the 150thall-time Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for Sun Devil Baseball. He is the second Sun Devil this season to be recognized after Spencer Torkelson earned the nod following the Opening Weekend of action.
In a weekend series sweep of Xavier and a road victory over Cal State Fullerton, Bishop bat .563 on 9-of-16 hitting with an incredible 1.313 slugging percentage. Bishop had home runs in each of ASU's three games against Xavier while also adding a triple and a double on the week.
Bishop scored nine runs for the Sun Devils over four games, including a career-best five runs on Friday night against Xavier. The junior outfielder also matched a career high with five RBIs in the series finale against the Musketeers and finished the week with a team-high nine RBIs over four games.
Bishop reached base at a .632 clip as he added two walks and was hit by a pitch to go with his hot bat. He also stole two bases and was a perfect 11-for-11 on defensive chances in center field.
Bishop now has a Pac-12-leading eight home runs on the season, already eclipsing his 2018 total of five. He had 10 career home runs entering the season, a mark that he is on pace to destroy this season. He is fourth nationally in the category and a major cog in ASU's currently sixth place ranking in the country with 24 home runs.
The junior leads the team with a .414 batting average on the season and is second with 22 RBIs. His. 948 slugging percentage is fifth in the nation and leads the Pac-12. He is also a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts.
When Bishop has led off an inning this season, he has reached base eight times on 13 chances – a .615 OBP that easily leads the team. Bishop leads the team in successfully advancing baserunners, doing so .675 percent of the time on 27-of-40 chances.
He is the only player that has reached base in each of ASU's 15 games this season and currently holds the team's longest active hitting streak at seven games. He is tied for first on the team with six multi-RBI games and second on the squad with eight multi-hit games
ASU returns to action this week with a midweek tilt against New Mexico State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. AZT (streamed on Pac-12 Network Plus) followed by the opening weekend of Pac-12 action at home beginning Friday against Washington State.
