TEMPE, Ariz. – After ending the meet with a season-best floor rotation, No. 19 Arizona State gymnastics earned the first Pac-12 win of the season over No. 24 Stanford, scoring a season-high 196.375 to the Cardinal's 195.000 in front of the home crowd at Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday.
"I saw a lot of fight in the last two events," Arizona State head coach Jay Santos said. "We've struggled to put all four events together at the level we want to, and vault kind of started us off a little flat. I let them know that that's not what we're capable of and that we need to get after the next three events, and that's exactly what they did. They weren't holding back, they were going after it. They fought through beam well and they really finished strong on floor, so I'm really happy with how we finished the meet."
In the Salute to Service meet, the Sun Devils (5-4, 1-3 Pac-12) got off to a slow start on vault, but bounced back. They built up to a 49.425 on floor, a season high. The dual-meet win was crucial for ASU, not only for the best team score in 2019 but for the first Pac-12 victory of the year.
Cairo Leonard-Baker earned her first all-around title of the year with a 39.325. She earned a 9.925 on bars and a 9.950 on floor to win the individual event titles, her fourth in both bars and floor this year. On beam, Jasmine Gutierrez and Justine Callis scored 9.850s on beam to tie for the individual title, with Gutierrez making her collegiate debut. Stephanie Tripodi also competed for the first time in the meet, earning a 9.750 on vault.
"I think they (Gutierrez and Tripodi) did really well," Santos said. "Jas did a great beam routine. Steph was a little up-and-down in warmups and was able to make the adjustments she needed to do and go out and do a good vault. It's great to see them out there."
