ATLANTA, Ga. – Sun Devil swimming kicked off day two of the U.S. Open Championships in Atlanta, sending three to the block to compete in the finals, including two freshmen in Jack Dolan and Julian Hill.
Cierra Runge got things started for ASU in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing 15th out of a field of nearly 100 swimmers to earn a spot in the B Final of the event. Rio participant Runge was joined by several from her Team USA squad in the finals in an ultra-competitive field including Katie Ledecky and Allison Schmitt, who has been training in Tempe for Tokyo under Bob Bowman. The junior ended up finishing in eighth in the B Final with a time of 4:14.34.
Hill stepped up next, earning a spot in the D Final of the 400-meter freestyle, finishing in second place among the all-Under 18 heat. Fellow freshman Dolan also earned a spot in the D Final, this time in the 50-meter freestyle. He too finished second with a time of 23.40 to round out the Sun Devils on day two.
Day three of the U.S. Open Championship will kick off at 8 a.m. MST with preliminary heats of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. Fans can stream the preliminary round on USA Swimming's Website, while the finals – beginning at 5 p.m. MST – can be watched on NBC Sports Network or streamed at NBCSports.com.
