A 9-3 run by the Sun Devils over the first seven minutes of the second quarter gave ASU a 21-12 advantage after Reili Richardson's jumper with 3:03 left in the half. Walker and Richardson tied for the team lead with four points each in the period to help ASU to a 23-14 halftime lead.
ASU's defense clamped down in the second quarter, holding Maine to only 22 percent from the floor (2-9).
The Black Bears scored six of the first eight points of the second half to get back within five points midway through the third quarter. They would get no closer as Van Hyfte scored five straight points to ignite a 17-2 run over the last 4:42 of the quarter.
