GREENSBORO, N.C. // AUSTIN, Texas – Sun Devil Swimming and Diving finished up their first round of winter invitationals this evening, with swimming at the NC State GAC Invitational and diving at the Texas Diving Invitational. Swimming finished the invitational in second place on the men's side out of a field of seven and fourth on the women's side.
Diver Youssef Selim followed his podium performance in the three-meter yesterday with another solid showing in the platform, taking fifth with a score of 338.95. The score achieved a Zone qualifying mark by over 100 points, allowing Selim to secure a spot in all three diving events come the Zone E Championships in March.
The distance Devils put on a show to start off the finals session, with Emma Nordin touching the wall for the fourth-fastest time in Arizona State history at 15:58.90. That time notched the junior her first win of the invitational after placing ninth in the 500 free and seventh in the 200 free. Cierra Runge followed Nordin in third, freshman Claire Nguyen in sixth and Kendall Dawson in eighth to round out ASU in the women's A Final.
Zach Poti followed up his victory in the 100 back last night with a second-place finish in the 200 back tonight. He did so in part by shaving nearly two seconds off his preliminary time earlier this morning to touch the wall at 1:41.34.
The sprint Devils also contributed key points tonight, with Carter Swift (second), Evan Carlson (fourth), Cody Bybee (fifth) and Jack Dolan (sixth) all representing the ASU men in the A Final. Swift has a solid weekend in North Carolina, as the junior never placed lower than the A Final in every event he participated in after placing sixth in the 50 free, third in the 200 free and second in the 100 free.
A couple of freshmen took the spotlight in the 200 fly tonight, with Lindsay Looney taking first overall on the women's time at 1:56.49. The time wrote her name in the record books, as it was the third-fastest time in Sun Devil history and the second-best time in the previous six seasons. Jade Foelske finished less than a second behind her to take second place for a one-two Sun Devil punch. Another freshman, Alex Colson, finished with the top ASU time at 1:44.98 for third place.
The men finished off the night on a high note, taking first in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:49.94 for the fifth-fastest time in school history. The foursome of Swift, Carlson, Bybee and Dolan accomplished the feat, while the B squad of Poti, Ethan Luc, Tyler Zuyus and Liam Bresette took third.
