TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Athletics continues to maintain a great relationship with the nation of Canada over the years and will celebrate the student-athletes hailing from there at three separate sporting events this February.
Men's basketball's Luguentz Dort, women's basketball's Taya Hanson, and women's lacrosse's Avery Hamill will all be a part of the celebrations dedicated to the neighbors of the North. Tickets are available for purchase to all Canada-themed events, including a bundle which includes all three events.
The debut of "Canada Night" will be February 7 when the Arizona State men's basketball team hosts Washington State at 6 p.m. Montreal native Luguentz Dort has made an immediate impact during his first season in Tempe. The Sun Devil's leading scorer so far this season averaging 16.4 points/game attended the Athlete Institute Basketball Academy located in Ontario. Dort was named NCAA National Player of the Week following his MVP performance at the MGM Resorts Main Event in Las Vegas. He opened the Main Event with 17 points and nine rebounds to help ASU to a 72-67 win of then No. 15 Mississippi State – one of the Sun Devils' four top-15 non-conference victory in the past two seasons.
The following day, February 8, is the Sun Devil Lacrosse season opener and the second edition of Canada Night. Arizona State will take on Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. Junior midfielder Avery Hamill attended Paris District High School located in Paris, Ontario. Hamill was a member of Team Ontario who captured the 2016 Women's Lacrosse Canadian National Championship. She showed flashes of scoring ability before her season was cut short due to injury. Hamill finished last year with eight goals in eight games, including putting together three-goal performances against Presbyterian (3/3) and Oregon (3/16).
The final opportunity to attend a "Canada Night" will be February 15 when the Arizona State women's basketball team hosts Colorado at 6 p.m. Freshman guard Taya Hanson attended Kelowna Secondary School in Kelowna, British Columbia. She has appeared in all 18 games so far for the No. 16 Sun Devil squad this season, exploding for a season-high 14 points in her debut at ASU. Hanson has been a part of the Canadian National Team program since 2015, appearing in international competition 14 times. Most recently, she helped lead Canada to a Silver medal while averaging 11.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in six games at the FIBA U18 Women's Americas Championship.
Following each game on Canada Nights, fans will be given the opportunity to ask questions to the three Canadian student-athletes in a Chalk Talk.
