ATLANTA – For the second time in three weeks, Arizona State head football coach Herm Edwards has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced on Monday.
The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week award honors a football coach who led his team to a significant victory during the previous week, while also embodying the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity. Edwards led the Sun Devils to a 24-17 road upset of No. 15 Cal on Friday. The win marked just the second time in history that ASU won two straight road games against ranked opponents in back-to-back opportunities, joining the 1986 campaign (Oct. 4 at #15 UCLA and Oct. 18 at #15 USC). It also represented the third time in school annals that the Sun Devils have won two road games in one season against ranked teams (1986 and 1997).
Two weeks ago, Edwards was named the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Week after ASU went to East Lansing, Mich., and upset No. 18 Michigan State 10-7. This is only the second time in the award's history that the same coach has earned the honor twice in a season. Notre Dame's Brian Kelly, who received the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Year award last season, also won the Coach of the Week honor twice that same year.
Under Edwards, Arizona State has now defeated four ranked teams in the last two years.
"Herm Edwards is truly making his mark on the Arizona State program," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "To be named Coach of the Week twice in a season really shows how hard he and those players have worked. Success like this is no accident, and Coach Dodd would appreciate the leadership Coach Edwards has shown guiding this team."
Similar to their win at Michigan State, the Sun Devils came from behind in the fourth quarter, driving 75 yards for the go-ahead score that came courtesy of junior running Eno Benjamin, who rushed for 100 yards and tied his career high with three touchdowns in the win. The Sun Devil defense held Cal to just 11 total fourth-quarter yards, forcing a pair of turnovers on downs in the final five minutes of game to seal the win.
"Herm Edwards continues to impress and reach new milestones in Tempe," said Gary Stokan, CEO and president of Peach Bowl, Inc. "Just two weeks ago, we talked about how Arizona State and Ray Anderson made a tremendous hire bringing Herm to ASU. He then followed that victory with an even more impressive win on the road against a ranked conference rival."
The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
Edwards is the third member of Sun Devil Football to be honored for Friday's win at Cal. Earlier in the day, senior center Cohl Cabral (Offensive Line Player of the Week) and redshirt senior defensive end George Lea (Defensive Line Player of the Week) both earned Pac-12 Player of the Week recognition for their performances against the Golden Bears.
The Sun Devils (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12), ranked No. 20 in this week's AP Top 25, return to action on Sat., Oct. 12 when they host Washington State (3-2, 0-2). Kickoff at Sun Devil Stadium is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Single-game tickets for ASU's next two home games – vs. Washington State (Oct. 12) and vs. USC (Nov. 9) – are currently on sale and can be purchased at www.sundeviltickets.com or by contacting the Sun Devil Athletics Ticket Office at 480-727-0000.
