TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil swimming kicks off their 2019-20 campaign this Friday with their annual intrasquad meet. Action at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center kicks off at 3 p.m., and as with all ASU swimming and diving meets, the event is free to the public.

The meet represents the first chance fans will get to see the 2019-20 squad in action as they gear up for the upcoming season, as well as the 2020 Olympic Trials. With many Olympic hopefuls on the squad, head coach Bob Bowman uses this event every year as a gauge for things to work on during the season.

"We do this intrasquad every year so that we have a chance to see the team in competition, and make some decisions about our travel squad," Bowman said. "It also helps us to get a feel for where we are before we start regular season competition."

The team is set to debut many new faces Friday, including three U.S. National Junior Team members in Claire Nguyen, Julian Hill and Lindsay Looney. For many, the meet will be very different from previous high school meets they have experience in.

"Not only do they get to see the level of swimming that we like, they get to see the mechanics of the meet and understand how a college dual meet works," Bowman said. "It's usually very different from the meets they're used to going to."

Looney, who was one of eight women selected for the 200 fly, comes to Tempe from Denison, Tex. Majoring in psychology at Arizona State, she holds records in the 100 fly and 200 IM entering into her freshman year as a Sun Devil.

Hill experienced an accomplished high school career in the classroom and pool. Hill was a seven-time NISCA All-American and three-time Florida 4A State Champion in the 200 free (2017, 2018) and 500 free (2018). Coming into his freshman season in Tempe, he also held the F.W. Buchholz High School record in the 200 free and 500 free. On the world level, Hill has qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials in the 200 and 400 freestyle events.

"Obviously our freshman class is very strong, so I'm excited to see how the newcomers do," Bowman said. "The most fun thing for me is getting to see the new swimmers perform."

Shifting gears toward returners, Bowman cited Cierra Runge, Erica Laning, Kendall Dawson, Emma Nordin, Nora Deleske Liam Bresette, Cody Bybee, Evan Carlson, Carter Swift and Zach Poti as those to watch this season. Various Sun Devils, including many of those Bowman mentioned, participated in high-level events throughout the summer including the Phillips 66 National Championships in Stanford, Calif.

"We had a great summer with our returning people," Bowman said. "We had some athletes that really stepped up and got to a new level this summer, so we're excited to see how they've progressed since then."

Intrasquad action beings at 3 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 27. While there will be no live coverage, fans can attend the event free of charge.
