TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil men's and women's swimming and diving kicks off their season in exactly one month, taking the deck for their annual Maroon and Gold Scrimmage on September 27 before diving into the regular season.
"We're very fortunate that our conference is so strong and we get to swim the best teams in the country," head coach Bob Bowman said. "Our strength of schedule is very strong and I think it'll be a good challenge for us."
Looking to kick off another successful season under head coach Bob Bowman, the Olympic head coach also made two exciting changes to his coaching staff in the offseason in promoting former assistant Rachel Stratton-Mills to an associate head coach spot while volunteer assistant Logan Hirka was elevated to an assistant role.
"If we don't have the best coaching staff in America, we have one of them," Bowman said. "They are people who have bought into the vision of making this program elite and are going to work tirelessly to make that happen."
The new season also brings a new Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, as the off season brought a newly renovated deck and brand-new record board.
"It's very important to swim at home and we're balancing out our schedule moving forward so we have a more balanced home-away schedule," Bowman said.
After the scrimmage, the Sun Devils head up to the Beehive State to take on the Utes on October 25, forgoing a beginning of the season non-conference schedule and instead heading straight into conference competition.
"There isn't really a reason to swim outside of conference because the Pac-12 is good and we have plenty of competition," Bowman said. "We have plenty of competition in the conference and in the invites that we're going to."
The L.A. schools roll into MPAC on the first weekend of November to finish up ASU's fall dual meet slate. Swimming finishes out their 2019 with the Mid-Season Invite hosted by NC State and select individuals head to U.S. Nationals in Atlanta while diving treks to Austin for the Texas Diving Invitational for the second season in a row.
"We made a long-term commitment to go to the invite NC State is hosting and it's going to feature some very good teams, and it's at the pool that the women's NCAAs will be held next year," Bowman said. "It's a good chance for us to be swimming at a good facility against some very good teams."
January brings the start of the second half of the season and a busy month for the Sun Devils as they face off against Northwestern, Kansas (women only), Stanford, Cal and Texas in the first month of 2020.
The Wildcats come into town February 8 for ASU's last regular season dual, marking the beginning of the post season training starting Feb. 26 for the women and men's diving and March 4 for men's swimming.
