STANFORD, Calif. – The Sun Devil Men's Golf team took care of business at the Stanford Regional, qualifying for the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Championship after finishing tied for second as a team.
In advancing out of the Stanford Regional and on to Fayetteville to compete in the 2019 National Championship, ASU is joined by No. 3 seed Stanford, No. 5 seed North Carolina, No. 10 seed Georgia Southern, and No. 4 seed LSU.
The Sun Devils shot a 274 (-6) on the day, maintaining a tie for second place with fifth-seeded North Carolina. A big reason why the Maroon & Gold were able to keep pace on the final day was the play of Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Cameron Sisk.
The freshman played with maturity beyond his years, coming through for his team in the biggest tournament of the season up to this point. He soared nine spots up the leaderboard today, finishing in a tie for second place overall while matching his career-low 65 (-5) on the final day. Sisk was feeling it on the front nine to kick-off the morning, as he would go on to birdie six of his first nine holes. He played nearly flawless golf all afternoon, recording a par or birdie on 17 of 18 holes.
Sisk (203, -7) was matched by teammate Chun An Yu, who also finished the Regional tied for second individually. After a first round in which he was one-stroke above par, Yu recovered quickly, producing back-to-back excellent rounds well under par. Golfstat's No. 5-ranked individual started off the day with some momentum, recording an eagle on the first hole. He went on to birdie five additional holes, moving up three spots into a tie for second.
The third best overall score by a Sun Devil came from Blake Wagoner. He was even today (70), improving four strokes from yesterday's round. He finished today's round strong, birdieing two of the last three holes helping him move up seven spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 27th.
Both Mason Andersen and Alex del Ray completed the Stanford Regional in the Top-50 among 75 of the top competitors in the nation. The freshman Andersen (72, +2) showed poise all weekend despite playing in his first NCAA Regional. He was a big reason why the Sun Devils found themselves with the second-most pars (168) of any team, as he finished the day with 14. Alex del Ray built off an outstanding day yesterday with a birdie on his second hole this morning. He was even through the first 14 holes, helping the Sun Devils create some separation from the cut line as they climbed the leaderboard.
The Sun Devils now turn their attention to the 2019 NCAA Championship. Arizona State has twice captured an NCAA Title, doing so in 1990 and 1996. Arkansas is the host institution for the 2019 Championships, which run May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Course in Fayetteville. ASU is the host school for the 2020-22 Championships at Grayhawk Golf Course.

CRAZY STAT: Six Sun Devils have earned or shared medalist honors this season. Jino Sohn and James Leow tied for first at the 37-player 2019 Arizona Intercollegiate individual tournament (Jan. 28-29). Alex del Rey won the 84-player National Invitational March 18-19 and freshman Cameron Sisk earned the Sonoran Showdown 20-player event, with both events taking place in Tucson. Sophomore Mason Andersen won a playoff to claim the 91-player field at San Diego's Lamkin Grips Classic on March 11-12, and then Chun An Yu put his name in the 2019 winner's column April 12-13 at ASU's Thunderbird Collegiate.
QUIETLY HAVING A GOOD SEASON: Lost in the chatter about six individual winners and three straight team titles is the solid season freshman Cameron Sisk is having, as his stroke average is currently the best by any Sun Devil freshman, with some pretty good golfers on the list dating to 1985. He earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and finished tied for second at the Stanford Regional thanks to a 65 (-5) in the final round.

This is the fifth consecutive year the program has advanced to the National Championship, the last three coming under 2019 Pac-12 Coach of the Year Matt Thurmond. After being on the outside looking-in following the completion of the First Round, the Sun Devils turned it on and proved why they were awarded a No. 1 national seed. They put together the second-lowest round of the day during each of the final two days, finishing behind only host Stanford, who took home the team Regional title.2019 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year??

As has been the case for much of the season, a team effort was required by the Sun Devils in order for them to safely advance in what was a competitive regional. The balance of the Arizona State lineup was on full display, with Cameron Sisk and Chun An Yu leading the way.Arkansas, here we come! ??@SunDevilMGolf finishes tied for second at the Stanford Regional and clinches a berth in the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Championship! #ForksUp pic.twitter.com/vAb1QIcjkX
