The No. 1 seeded Sun Devil men's golf team sits in seventh place after the first round Monday of the NCAA Stanford Regional held at the Stanford Golf Course (par-70/6,727 yards) after shooting a 3-over 283, nine shots back of host and Pac-12 Champion Stanford in the 13-team and 75-player field.
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Cameron Sisk shot a 1-under 69 with four birdies, as he played the final five holes in 2-under after a bogey on No. 12 and a double bogey on 13. Junior Blake Wagoner had four birdies in the final dozen holes to also finish at 1-under.
Junior Chun An Yu, after notching bogeys in three of six previous holes, posted a birdie on No. 18 to finish the day for ASU who had 55 pars, 15 birdies and an eagle -- by junior Mason Andersen at the par-5, 447-yard fifth hole -- but had to count three double bogeys and a triple bogey.
The NCAA Men's Golf Committee selected 81 teams and 45 individuals for regional competition including automatic qualifiers (28) and at-large teams (53) and ASU is the No. 1 seed at Stanford. Five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional shall advance to the finals.
This marks just the third time in 10 seasons ASU is competing in the Pacific Time Zone for regional action.
NCAA team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville as Arkansas is the host institution for the 2019 championships. ASU is the host school for the 2020-22 Championships at Grayhawk Golf Course.
The teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday and Wednesday at Stanford to finish the NCAA Regional.

ASU IN THE REGIONALS: With the team victory and Jon Rahm's title at the 2016 Albuquerque Regional, ASU has won or tied for a NCAA regional title seven times. ASU tied with Arizona in 1991 and tied with New Mexico in 1998. It won the title outright in 1995, 1999, 2001 2009 and 2016. In addition to Rahm's two titles (2015 as well), Sun Devil Paul Casey won a 1998 individual regional title outright followed by Jeff Quinney (1999), Benjamin Alvarado Holley (2007) and then Jesper Kennegard in 2009. LAST YEAR AT REGIONALS: The @SunDevilMGolf team knew it had a tough task ahead of it when it was seeded No. 4 in the 2018 #NCAAGolf Raleigh Regional, more than 2,100 miles away. In the field was ACC champion and fourth-ranked Georgia Tech, No. 9 California, No. 16 Texas and then some local flavor that always makes a regional trip stressful. Host North Carolina State (No. 36), and same region neighbors No. 28 Duke, MEAC champion Augusta and Big South champion Liberty all fired hot final rounds and had the Sun Devils on the ropes, but sophomore Chun An Yu wasn't ready to call it a season. The Sun Devils, needing a birdie on the final hole to realistically have any chance at a playoff, not only got a birdie but Georgia Tech posted a bogey and as a result the two-time NCAA Champion Sun Devils (1990 and 1996) were off to Stillwater for the NCAA Championships as the youngest team in the field.

CRAZY STAT: Six Sun Devils have earned or shared medalist honors this season. Jino Sohn and James Leow tied for first at the 37-player 2019 Arizona Intercollegiate individual tournament (Jan. 28-29). Alex del Rey won the 84-player National Invitational March 18-19 and freshman Cameron Sisk earned the Sonoran Showdown 20-player event, with both events taking place in Tucson. Sophomore Mason Andersen won a playoff to claim the 91-player field at San Diego's Lamkin Grips Classic on March 11-12, and then Chun An Yuput his name in the 2019 winner's column April 12-13 at ASU's Thunderbird Collegiate.
QUIETLY HAVING A GOOD SEASON: Lost in the chatter about six individual winners and three straight team titles is the solid season freshman Cameron Sisk is having, as his stroke average is currently the best by any Sun Devil freshman, with some pretty good golfers on the list dating to 1985. He earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.
