PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The No. 15 Sun Devil Women's Golf team battled their way to a spot in the top-five after Day One of the 2019 Pac-12 Invitational, currently sitting tied for fifth after the first 18 holes at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Arizona State settled in on the back nine, putting together a solid finish to their round giving them momentum heading into tomorrow. The Sun Devils will start their second round on the front nine at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, with individuals teeing off every ten minutes. All five members of the lineup sit the Top-25 in the individual race after the opening round.
Junior Olivia Mehaffey is in serious contention for the Individual title, shooting a 69 (-2) which is good enough for a second-place tie after the first day of action. Mehaffey sits four strokes back of the tournament leader, Stanford's Albane Valenzuela. She was extremely successful when facing a par-four, shooting three-under in those situations, the second-best mark so far behind the tournament leader Valenzuela.
Finishing with the second-best score of the day by a Sun Devil was Raquel Olmos, who finds herself in the Top-20 after turning in a 74 (+3). A trio of Sun Devils are currently tied for 25th, led by Senior Madison Kerley, who turned in the highlight of the day amongst the entire field with her play on the 16th hole. The par-five, 474-yard challenge was no match for Kerley, as she only need three shots on her way to recording the only eagle of the morning. Kerley is tied for the best scoring average on par-five holes, shooting three-under for the day thanks in large part to the eagle. Her teammate Raquel Olmos also fared well in the par-five category, boasting a two-under, the third best score of the tournament.
The play of Alessandra Fanali and Alexandra Forsterling was key to the Sun Devils fighting their way into contention for the Territorial Cup Series point, as ASU sits just three strokes back of rival Arizona. The duo will start the morning tied with their teammate, Madison Kerley, for 25th place. As a team, Arizona State finished with 15 birdies, the second most in the session.
Top-ranked USC was the only team to shoot under par, posting a 283 (-1) on day one. No. 4 Stanford sits in second place, thanks in large part to the Individual leader after 18 holes, Albane Valenzuela. No. 7 Arizona, No. 21 Oregon, and No. 13 UCLA round out the Top-5 along with the Maroon and Gold.
