PALOS VERDES, Calif. – The Sun Devil Women's Golf team completed the second round of the 2019 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships at Palos Verdes Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
No. 15 Arizona State leaped Oregon on the leaderboard to put them in a fourth-place tie with UCLA heading into the final day. Junior Olivia Mehaffey continued her strong play, posting a 70 (-1) while turning in yet another round under par. She is one of only two golfers at the Championships to have recorded consecutive rounds below par. Because of her efforts, Mehaffey's score of 139 (-3) through two rounds currently has her in second place, sitting only four strokes back of the leader, Stanford's Albane Valenzuela.
Alessandra Fanali managed to improve from her first-round score, earning a 74 (+3) to move her up into a tie for 21st place. She found a groove early in the morning, playing bogey-free over the last eight holes of the front nine.
Another Sun Devil matched their round from Day One, as Alexandra Forsterling recorded another 75 (+4). She looked locked-in on the front nine, managing to finish the first half of her round under par. Heading into the final day of the tournament, Forsterling is tied for 25th.
Rounding out the lineup for the Sun Devils was Madison Kerley, who showed improvement throughout the round once she settled in. She bounced back from a rough first five holes to birdie the sixth hole. Kerley played her best golf in the middle of the round, finishing a stroke under par on holes 6-16.
Arizona State still finds themselves within striking distance of earning the Territorial Cup Series point, sitting four strokes back of their rivals after day two.
A strong suit for the Sun Devils lineup has been their play on par-five holes, going six-under on such holes so far in the tournament. The 26 birdies are the third most as a team, while Madison Kerley's three-shot 16th hole stands alone as the sole eagle recorded at the Championship.
