TEMPE, Ariz. – On their second to last day playing at home this season, No. 8 Sun Devil women's water polo dropped their first match of the day, 9-7, to No. 19 San Jose State, before rebounding with a 6-4 win over No. 21 San Diego State.
Prior to the morning contest vs. San Jose State, the ASU team and coaching staff honored this year's graduating class – P.J. Allin, Rosie Huck, Maud Koopman, Julia Reyes, and Catherine Simko.
Arizona State closes their home season on Sunday morning, Mar. 31 with a match vs. Siena at 10 am MT. There will also be a neutral site match between San Jose State and San Diego State at 11:30 am MT. Both contests at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center are free to the public.
Game 1: San Jose State 9, Arizona State 7
The Sun Devils held a 2-1 lead after the first quarter of play but the Spartans tied the match, 2-2, by the halftime break. ASU outscored SJSU in the fourth quarter but a five-goal third quarter for San Jose State made the difference.
Lieke Rogge, Maud Koopman, and Borbala Kekesi each scored two goals apiece in the effort. Koopman, L. Rogge, and P.J. Allin all each made three steals while Allin added two assists.
In goal, Bridget Johnston played the entire contest for ASU, making 10 games and two steals. SJSU's Hannah Henry got the win in goal, making four saves.
Game 2: Arizona State 6, San Diego State 4
Arizona State scored two minutes into the match before SDSU knotted it up at one just under three minutes later. The Sun Devils would pour on goals, taking a 3-1 lead halfway through the second quarter before San Diego State tied it once again two minutes into the second half.
ASU once again took a two-goal lead, 5-3, with back-to-back goals in the third quarter. The Aztecs scored once again 43 seconds into the final quarter to pull within one but Koopman scored her third of the game to give the Sun Devils a two-goal advantage, which they would keep.
Koopman led the Sun Devils in scoring with three goals while L. Rogge, Amira Van Buren, and Julia Reyes each added a goal apiece.
In goal, Bridget Johnston picked up the win with seven saves and one steal in the complete game effort. L. Rogge also had three steals.
