TEMPE – Sun Angel Stadium welcomes Texas A&M, UCLA and Iowa among others this weekend as the Sun Devils open their outdoor track and field campaign with the Baldy Castillo Invitational Friday and Saturday in Tempe.
The new outdoor season comes right on the heels of the NCAA Indoor Championships that saw Arizona State bring home two first-team All-America honors and one NCAA title when Samantha Noennig won the women's shot put.
Although first-team All-American William Paulson will not compete this weekend for ASU, Noennig will open her season in the discus throw, and second-team long jump honoree Jessica Barreira will throw the javelin for the first time in the Maroon and Gold kit since she finished eighth in the event at the Pac-12 Championships.
Saturday will mark the highly anticipated Sun Devil debut for All-American sprinter Steven Champlin. The senior will lineup in the 200-meter dash and as a member of the new-look 4x400-meter relay quartet.
On the women's side, Kaylee Antill will open things up for the Devils in the hammer throw Friday afternoon. The junior earned her first All-America honor in the event last spring in Eugene, Oregon, and is coming off of an indoor season that saw her take sixth in the weight throw at the conference championships.
Several women who ran themselves into ASU's top-10 lists indoors will look to build on their success indoors under the sun this weekend, including Alexandra Williams and Bianca Tinoco.
Williams clocked the ninth-fastest 60-meter hurdles time in school history when she set a personal best at the MPSF Championships. She'll run the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday to open up her final outdoor season.
Tinoco made her regional debut last season when she advanced to the meet in Sacramento with an outdoor PR of 2:08.14. This past indoor season, she scored in the 800 at the conference championships by clocking a lifetime best 2:07.63 that moved her to fourth in Sun Devil history indoors.
The Devils return two men in Michael Chadwick and Elijah Hughes who advanced to the prelim last season, while five women (Antill, Barreira, Noennig, Tinoco, Alexis Nichols and Samantha Ortega) enter the season with a 2018 West Regional appearance under their belts.
The 2019 Baldy Castillo Invitational will begin at 11:30 a.m. PT Friday with the men's (under-46m) discus throw. ASU's first event will be the women's hammer at 1 and the first running event will be the 100-meter hurdles at 6:30.
Saturday gets going at 11 a.m., as Noennig competes in the discus. The bulk of the running events will get going Saturday afternoon with the 4x800-meter relays opening the track at 2:30.
Results will be provided by Finished Results and a recap of the competition will be available online following each day's events.
