PHOENIX – For the second time in the last three games, Sun Devil Baseball left the yard four times as No. 23 Arizona State routed Xavier, 12-0, on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium to open a three-game series against the Musketeers.
Boyd Vander Kooi had the best outing of his season, tossing seven scoreless innings to help lead the Sun Devils to a 13-0 record on the season and the second consecutive Friday night shutout. The sophomore moved to 2-0 on the season as he scattered five hits while striking out six and walking two.
Vander Kooi stranded eight Xavier batters over the course of the evening, working out of several jams with some filthy off-speed action to go along with a heater that was sitting low-to-mid 90s even through the seventh inning.
The Sun Devil bats did the rest, going big fly four times to help the Sun Devils eclipse 10 runs for the eighth time in 13 games this season. Hunter Bishop, Lyle Lin, Carter Aldrete all went yard in the middle of the order before freshman Marc Lidd notched his first career dinger in a pinch hit at-bat late in the game.
The heart of the ASU lineup tonight in Bishop, Lin and Aldrete combined to go 8-for-11 (.727) with three home runs and nine RBIs.
Bishop scored five runs in the contest, recording a run for each plate appearance he had (also adding two walks and a hit by pitch). It was a career high for runs scored for the junior, who now has 24 on the season. His home run was his team-leading sixth of the season, good for second in the Pac-12 and surpassing his previous career high of five just 13 games into the season.
Lin had four RBIs in the effort, bringing his Pac-12 leading total to 24 for the season. That total remains notable as Lin had just 18 RBIs total as a sophomore last season. Lin also has three home runs on the year – already a career-high.
The Sun Devils now have 20 home runs on the season after entering the weekend sixth in the nation and first in the league in the category.
Bishop got things going as he capitalized on a Spencer Torkelson walk in the first inning with a line drive shot to right center for a 2-0 Sun Devil lead right out of the gates.
Lin opened things up in the third inning with his three-run shot after Xavier walked Torkelson and hit Bishop to make it 5-0. ASU added three more in the fifth after a sac fly from Lin and a solo shot from Aldrete followed by an RBI single from Sam Ferri.
ASU added crooked numbers in the sixth and seventh innings as well, with the Sun Devil dugout going wild for Marc Lidd as the freshman took advantage of a hanger for his first career home run in a Sun Devil uniform that made it a 11-0 game before Aldrete closed out the scoring with an RBI single.
ASU returns to action on Saturday looking to keep the undefeated streak alive. The Sun Devils will get underway at 6:30 p.m. MT with the game scheduled to be streamed live through the Pac-12 Networks Plus Live Stream.
