TEMPE – The Sun Devils closed the first weekend of February in competitions across the country in New Mexico, North Carolina and just up I-17 in Flagstaff.
Seven thousand feet up in Flagstaff, the Sun Devils picked up two event wins behind Matthew Eckles' performance in the pole vault and Beatrice Llano's outing in the weight throw.
Eckles won the pole vault by clearing a bar of 5.20m/17-0.75. Sophomore Michael Chadwick finished sixth and multi-event sophomore Gregory Fernandez took 15th with a personal best height of 3.70m/12-1.50 feet.
Llano moved up the school record list in the weight throw with her mark of 20.24m/66-5.00 feet Saturday. She passed Tai Battle to slot in at sixth in history, just under eight feet off of Maggie Ewen's school record from last season.
Kentre Patterson matched his season-best time of 8.09 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and finished third in the final in Albuquerque.
Austin Kratz and Holland Cabara both advanced to the 60-meter final in Albuquerque, and Kratz would go on to finish fourth overall in 6.88 seconds.
Out east at the Camel City Invitational, William Paulson was the fifth-best finisher in the men's elite mile race.
While this weekend was a quiet one for the Devils, next weekend will be the busiest of the season to date as the squads split up again to go to some of the premiere events of the season in Ames, Iowa; Fayetteville, Arkansas and Albuquerque.
