Cathedral City, Calif. -- The 13th-ranked Arizona State softball team defeated Bethune-Cookman, 4-1, Saturday evening in the team's third day of play at the 2019 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
In the circle, junior right-hander Samantha Mejia threw her fifth complete-game of the year, allowing just one-run on three-hits en route to her seventh win of the season.
Following back-to-back scoreless frames to start the game, ASU broke through for the game's first run in the bottom of the third when senior Skylar McCarty took advantage of a Wildcat wild-pitch to put ASU up, 1-0.
After a scoreless top of the fourth, the Sun Devils would add two more in the home-half of the inning, again taking advantage of more Bethune-Cookman miscues. Following a one-out walk by Kiara Kennedy, Kindra Hackbarth roped an RBI-double to left, brining in Kennedy on the play.
With Hackbarth able to move into scoring position on a groundout, another Bethune-Cookman wild-pitch would bring her in as well, pushing the Sun Devil lead to 3-0 after four innings.
The visitors would plate their first run in the top of the sixth, but it would be too little too late as a McCarty RBI-double would score sophomore Bella Loomis and push the score to the final, 4-1.
The Sun Devils will be back in action for their final game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic against Cal Poly Sunday afternoon. Fans can follow all of the action from the 2019 season by following @ASUSoftball on Twitter.
