TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 9 Sun Devil Water Polo team (8-3) capped the weekend on a high note, avenging a loss from a week ago, defeating No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, 7-5, to finish fifth at the UCSD Triton Invitational.
Earlier in the day, the Sun Devils earned another top-25 win, 8-6, over No. 13 Loyola Marymount to advance to the fifth-place match.
Six of the Sun Devils' eight wins so far have come over top-25 opponents while the UCSB win was their first top-10 win of the season.
ASU has two weeks to prepare for their next action, traveling to UC Irvine's Barbara Kalbus Invitational Feb. 22-24 before returning home for their first MPSF match Saturday, Mar. 9 vs. Stanford.
Game 1: #9 ASU 8, #13 LMU 6
The Sun Devils started strong, scoring every goal in the first quarter to lead early, 3-0. LMU pulled within one, 3-2, three minutes into the second period before ASU regained a two-goal lead, 4-2, behind P.J. Allin just 22 seconds later.
The Lions came within one once again just over halfway through the second period but Arizona State would score four consecutive goals across the end of the second and beginning of the third periods.
ASU leading by five, 8-3, LMU scored the final three goals of the contest but would not be able to overcome their deficit as the Sun Devils earned their seventh win of the season.
Maud Koopman, Allin, and Bente Rogge scored two goals apiece while Lieke Rogge and Viktoria Orlova also added a goal apiece.
Game 2: #9 ASU 7, #7 UCSB 5
Maud Koopman and Bente Rogge showed veteran leadership, putting the Devils up 2-0 in the first three minutes of the contest before UCSB countered at the 3:42 mark of the first quarter.
Rogge scored her second goal of the contest on a 5-meter penalty shot with 1:14 left in the first to give ASU a 3-1 lead before UCSB scored two quick goals in the final minute of the period to tie the contest, 3-3.
The beginning of the second period looked much like the first, as the Sun Devils scored the only two goals, both coming from Koopman, to lead 5-3 going into the halftime break.
UCSB would pull within one halfway through the third period, 5-4, but ASU extended their lead back to two goals, 6-4, 30 seconds later on a P.J. Allin goal.
The Gauchos would make one more attempt, pulling within one once again, 6-5, with 4:34 remaining in the contest but Amira Van Buren scored on a powerplay goal with 2:06 left.
Koopman led the way with three goals while B. Rogge scored two. Amira Van Buren and P.J. Allin added a goal each in the effort as ASU picked up their eighth win of the season.
