SAN DIEGO, Calif. – On the first day of the two-day UCSD Triton Invitational, No. 9 Sun Devil Water Polo went 1-1, winning their first game of the weekend before dropping the nightcap in a close match. ASU defeated No. 22 San Diego State, 12-7, before dropping a 6-5 loss to No. 8 Michigan.

ASU faces No. 13 Loyola Marymount on Sunday morning at 9:30 am MT/8:30 am PT. The winner will face the winner of No. 11 UC Davis/No. 7 UCSB for fifth place while the loser will face the loser of that match for seventh place.

Game 1: #9 Arizona State 12, #22 San Diego State 7

The Sun Devils were led in scoring by Bente Rogge, who scored nearly half of ASU's goals (5) followed by Amira Van Buren and Rosie Huck, who scored two apiece. Lieke Rogge, Maud Koopman, and Borbala Kekesi also added a goal to the win.

ASU scored the first goal of the contest and held a 4-2 lead at the first quarter break and a 7-5 lead at halftime. With a 9-7 lead heading into the final quarter, the Sun Devils tacked on three more unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to ensure the victory.

Game 2: #8 Michigan 6, #9 Arizona State 5

In the Sun Devils' second match of the day, they tied the score early as Rogge tied things up 1-1 at the 4:40 mark of the first quarter. After the Wolverines took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter, the Sun Devils pulled within one early in the period and once again just before halftime, 4-3.

Arizona State would pull within one two more times in the second half, near the five-minute mark of both the third and fourth quarters, but could not overcome the deficit, falling in a close match.

Once again, B. Rogge led the team in scoring with three goals, tallying eight total on the day. Julia Reyes and Maud Koopman also scored for ASU. Bridget Johnston played the entire match in goal.
