BOSTON, Mass. – The Sun Devil Hobey Baker Memorial Award nominees took over the stage at Agganis Arena Saturday night, as sophomore forward Johnny Walker extended his NCAA goal-scoring lead with his 20th and 21st of the season in a 3-0 victory.
Between the pipes, North Andover, Massachusett native Joey Daccord cemented his NCAA-leading seventh shutout of the season to hand Boston University just its second loss at home in nearly two months.
"I'm really happy with our game and I thought we played great," I thought we deserved the outcome. We felt like we played good enough to win last night, so there was definitely a bitter taste in our mouth with the bounces they had."
In the first period, Daccord helped keep the game scoreless with a robbery of BU while sprawled out. Daccord stuck his glove out to take away space and got just enough of the elevated shot to deflect it wide.
After a scoreless first frame, it was the Sun Devils' third line striking first for the second-straight night. This time, it was Anthony Croston feeding Filips Buncis on the trailer during a 3-on-1 rush for a blast that beat Boston's Vinnie Purpura in his first collegiate start.
With just over a minute remaining in the second, and the Sun Devils swarming, freshman defenseman Josh Maniscalco picked up his 12th assist of the season on a shot from the top of the slot that was tipped by Walker past Purpura. With the goal, Walker became the first Sun Devil to reach 20 goals in a season.
The second period was controlled by ASU, outshooting the Terriers 18-9 in the middle frame. They continued to outshoot them 39-28 overall on the night.
In the third, Walker netted his second of the night for his 10th multi-point and sixth multi-goal night of the season. His 21st goal extends his lead to four atop the NCAA.
Daccord finished the night with 28 saves in front of family and friends, and now boasts a 17-10-1 record, .930 save percentage – which ranks 6th in the country – and 2.23 goals against average.
The Sun Devils now move their focus to Rochester Institute of Technology next weekend in New York.
Limited tickets remain for the final home series of the year as we honor the first four-year Sun Devil Division I senior class against American International Feb. 15-16.
