BOSTON, Mass. – Six goals were scored between the No. 17/15 Sun Devils and red-hot Boston University at Agganis Arena on Friday night, and ASU technically scored four of them in a 4-2 loss to the Terriers.
After ASU (16-10-1) started the scoring affair just six minutes into the first period, BU (10-9-3) scored three unanswered – two off Sun Devil turnovers and another off a Sun Devil defenseman in front – for a 3-1 lead. Despite cutting the deficit to one, a Terrier pass went off the stick of a Sun Devil forward and past ASU goalie Joey Daccord for the 4-2 lead and eventual final.
"We for sure put two in ourselves and kind of put three in – the second went off a skate and they got a bounce," said head coach Greg Powers. "We put more goals in ourselves than we did on them, and against a really good team like BU, that's never going to win you a game."
Sophomore forward Filips Buncis got the game started, forcing a turnover of his own and battling on the forecheck before finding senior forward Anthony Croston on the back doorstep for the easy tap in and ASU's sole lead of the game.
"We've generally been really good when we score the first goal," said Powers. "We got that done and we really focused on getting the first one and play downhill. We had a couple really good chances to go up two."
Entering Friday, the Sun Devils were 13-1-1 when scoring the first goal.
Five minutes later, the Terriers capitalized on the first Sun Devil turnover, as a pass out of the ASU zone went off a skate, right to a BU forward who found Joel Farabee behind the defenseman for a 1-on-1 with Daccord. He knotted the game at one.
In the final minute of the first frame, a centering pass ricocheted off the skate of an ASU defenseman in front and right to the stick of Patrick Curry for another tap in off a Sun Devil mishap.
The luck continued to be favoring the home team in the second period. Seven minutes in, Farabee was credited with a goal as his centering pass deflected off the stick of Sun Devil d-man Jarrod Gourley in front and past Daccord for a 3-1 lead.
ASU co-captain Brinson Pasichnuk cut the Terriers' lead in half less than two minutes later with a rocket from the top of the slot that redirected past Dallas Stars' first round draft pick Jake Oettinger.
Just when it seemed like the momentum might shift, three minutes later another ill-fated bounce killed the Devils mojo. A pass from the top of the zone to the right of Daccord was tipped in front by sophomore forward Dominic Garcia attempting to break it up, and it redirected right over Daccord's shoulder.
Despite outshooting the Terriers 17-6 in the third period – and 40-32 overall -- the Sun Devils couldn't manage to overcome the misfortunes late.
The grudge match Saturday is set for 7 p.m. (EST) / 5 p.m. (MST) on Patriot League Network.
Limited tickets remain for the final home series of the year as we honor the first four-year Sun Devil Division I senior class against American International Feb. 15-16.
