TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Water Polo team closed opening weekend with two exhibition matches – one vs. the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) and one vs. the Chinese National Team Sunday.

The Sun Devils ended their exhibition match vs. NYAC in a 12-12 tie, decided upon by the coaches.

Maud Koopman led the way for the Sun Devils with four goals, adding two assists, while Bente Rogge also had a multi-goal game (2). Six others added one goal apiece.

In goal, Bridget Johnston played the entire game, making 11 saves. Shots on the match were even, 30-all.

Showing ASU's resolve and promise, the draw was against a NYAC team that features post-grads with impressive resumes. Both NYAC goalies who saw time were their program's career leaders in saves (Indiana, Siena) and the roster featured four All-Americans from MPSF powerhouses including Stanford and UCLA.

Of note, All-American Tanya Gandy, now playing for NYAC, was on four of the five consecutive NCAA championship teams at UCLA while Ashley Grossman also won a national championship at Stanford.

In their marquee matchup of the weekend, the Sun Devils also faced the Chinese National Team with China emerging victorious, 14-6. Julia Reyes had a multi-goal game while Amira Van Buren, Lieke Rogge, Koopman, and Bente Rogge also added goals. Johnston once again played the entire game in goal, making eight saves.

As exhibition matches, statistics do not count towards the Sun Devils' totals but serve as extra experience for the team as they prepare for the remainder of the season.

The Sun Devils have two weeks before their next official match – at Hawai'i on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3 pm MT. ASU returns home to host the Cross-Conference Challenge Feb. 1-3, hosting Princeton, Azusa Pacific, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Monterey Bay, Iona, and Cal Baptist.
