TEMPE, Ariz. – In their season opener to kick off the ASU Invitational #1, Sun Devil water polo defeated Marist, 16-8, at Sun Devil Fitness Complex to start the weekend.
 
Maud Koopman started the season where she left off, leading the way with five goals on seven shots. Bente Rogge added four goals to the effort while newcomers Blaire McDowell and Lieke Rogge also had multi-goal games, scoring two apiece.
 
A balanced effort, three other Sun Devils (P.J. Allin, Julia Reyes, Layla Waters) scored with seven Sun Devils earning a place on the scoresheet for a goal. Allin also added two assists.
 
For L. Rogge and McDowell, it was their first career goals in their first career action as Sun Devils while Bridget Johnston also saw her first appearance at ASU in goal.
 
Newcomer Johnston got the start and win in goal with four saves in 24 minutes of action. Belen Ehinger played one quarter, making one save.
 
As a team, ASU outshot Marist, 28-19, going 6-for-9 on powerplays. The Sun Devils also won all four sprints to start the quarter.
 
The Sun Devils and Red Foxes faced a second time Saturday in an exhibition match, ASU also emerging victorious, 10-5. Arizona State trailed early before scoring seven straight to take the lead and finish the game.
 
In the exhibition, Allin was the leading scorer (2) with eight other Sun Devils contributing a goal apiece. ASU showed more efficiency on goal than their opponent, outshot narrowly, 28-27, by Marist. ASU also held Marist to 0-for-8 on powerplay goal attempts.
 
ASU will face the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) and Chinese National Team on Sunday to finish out the weekend. The matches will be back at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center and are free to the public.
