TEMPE, Ariz. – Ringing in the 2019 season, No. 20 Arizona State gymnastics finished in second with a score of 195.000, trailing No. 19 Missouri and beating No. 23 Minnesota and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
"We have work to do," Arizona State head coach Jay Santos said. "had a few jitters. We need to clean up and hit out landings better. The beam routines were close to where we want them, but there were a few bobbles or a small mistake here and there. If we finish those routines clean, we are in good shape. Overall, I'm happy, but we have work to do."
The Sun Devils (2-1) picked up their first ranked win after edging out the No. 23 Gophers. The best highest event total came in the last rotation on floor where they earned a 48.925, led by Cairo Leonard-Baker's 9.900. The sophomore scored a 9.900 in both floor and bars. She finished second in the all-around with a 39.200, behind Minnesota's Lexy Ramler who earned a 39.525.
Team Results:
The Gym Devils got off to a slow start on vault until Kaitlyn Szafranski earned a 9.800 to spark some life into the squad. That score matched her career high on vault, which she has scored five other times. Morgan Wilson ended the rotation with another solid 9.800.
Rotation Two – Bars | 48.750
