BOWLING GREEN, OHIO — A program record 13 Sun Devil Gymnastics student-athletes received Scholastic All-American Awards for the 2017-18 academic year, as announced by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) on Monday.
To qualify for the exclusive honor, gymnasts must maintain the required 3.5 G.P.A. or better. By placing 13 on the Scholastic All-American list, the Sun Devils tied with Oregon State for the most selections in the Pac-12 Conference.
As a team, the Sun Devils finished the academic year with an outstanding 3.6384 G.P.A. The G.P.A. represents the 12th highest total in the NCAA and the 2nd highest in the Pac-12 (Utah, 3.6629 G.P.A.). Arizona State had 68.42% of their team receive All-American Academic honors.
The record-setting number of selections comes after a program-best nine gymnasts were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Team in March. Justine Callis, Nichelle Christopherson, Jessica Ginn, Heather Udowitch, Katelyn Lentz, Ashley Szafranski, Morgan Hart, and Morgan Wilson each earned a spot on both the Pac-12 All-Academic and WCGA Scholastic All-American teams.
A record number of gymnasts will receive the Scholastic All-America Award for the 2017-18 academic year. Overall, a new record of 760 (55%) student-athletes earned Scholastic All-America honors nationally. The percentage increased from last year's total of 47.83%.
Four Sun Devil gymnast finished the academic year with a 4.0+ G.P.A. Corinne Belkoff, Jessica Ginn, Katelyn Lentz and Anne Kuhm all contributed to a new record, as 118 student-athletes earned a 4.0 G.P.A. this year.
