KENNESAW, Ga. – The Arizona State women's lacrosse team (1-0) brought the spark down to the South, picking up their first ever win in their first ever game against Kennesaw State Friday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The Sun Devils defeated the Owls 14-6, lead by junior co-captain Kerri Clayton's seven individual goals, an obvious program record.
"We were incredibly proud of the team's effort today from start to finish," said head coach Courtney Martinez Connor. "They played hard for 60 minutes which was one of our main goals. Obviously to compete against the opponent is another and they did that with a full effort. As a coach you have to be proud of that and lucky for us we were able to come away with the first win for our program."
The Sun Devils came out strong right from the start, with freshman attacker Graci Fulkerson scoring the first goal in program history in the first minute of the game. The next ten minutes proved even for both teams before freshmen Julia Burns and Emily Glagolev each scored free position goals.
Clayton scored two more goals for the Sun Devils in the first half and Burns added an additional goal to put ASU up 6-4 after one.
Freshman midfielder Maddy Hunter had an outstanding first game, scoring two goals, picking up 11 ground balls, recording five draw controls and causing six Owl turnovers.
Clayton came out in the second half and sparked the offense, scoring five of the program-record eight goals in that half.
The defense was able to hold the Owls to just six goals on 22 shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau had 10 saves on the game and picked up her first career win.
"I think our defense was very disciplined. We pride ourselves on playing a team-style defense and they certainly played that to the epitome especially in the second half," Martinez Connor added.
Up next, the Sun Devils finish the weekend in DeLand, Fla., traveling to Stetson University to battle the Hatters. The team continues their inaugural season on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. MST. The game will once again be broadcasted on ESPN3 for fans to watch live.
