GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Sun Devil Hockey's four-game winning streak came to a halt Friday night in round one of the Desert Hockey Classic, as special teams proved costly in a 3-0 loss to No. 19 Clarkson at Gila River Arena.
The penalty kill unit would be tested early in the game, as Clarkson (10-6-0) was able to capitalize to build an early 1-0 lead before putting away another goal to put the Golden Knights up 2-0.
"At the end of the day, when you get out-worked and out-executed, the result is going to be what you just saw," said head coach Greg Powers. "It wasn't like possession was crazy in their favor. They just executed more than we did.
"We have to play our style of hockey. We have to stay out of the box, we have to play more five-on-five."
In the final two periods, the No. 15/13 Sun Devils (14-7-0) continued to put pressure on the Golden Knights in their attempt to cut the 2-0 lead in half.
ASU put Clarkson on their heels during the second period, as the Sun Devils drew penalties but failed to capitalize on four power-play opportunities in the middle frame.
The Golden Knights added an additional tally on the man advantage -- finishing 3-for-7 on the night -- early in the 3rd to put the nail in the coffin, 3-0. It was the first time this season the Sun Devils allowed three power-play goals.
The Sun Devils will play in the consolation game of the Desert Hockey Classic Saturday, Dec. 29 against No. 3/8 Minnesota State-Mankato at 7:30 p.m. (MST) at Gila River Arena on Pac-12 Networks.
General admission tickets can still be found by clicking here or at the Gila River Arena box office.
