SEATTLE – Despite strong performances from Alyse Ford and Courtney Leffel, Arizona State women's volleyball lost in four sets (25-20, 18-25, 29-27, 25-4) to Washington in Alaska Airlines Arena on Friday night.
The Sun Devils (13-12, 4-9 Pac-12) split the season series with the Huskies (14-9, 6-7 Pac-12) with this loss. Arizona State has now lost seven in a row.
Alyse Ford collected a match-high 24 kills tonight, her second match with 20 or more kills this year. She also had three aces and nine blocks. Courtney Leffel had 27 digs to lead all players. She has had double-digit digs in 10 matches in a row, surpassing her previous career-high streak of nine. It is also her second-straight match with 20 or more digs.
The Sun Devils started the match hot, jumping out to a 3-1 start following an ace from Peterson. However, the Huskies responded by stringing together four straight to get up 14-9. Back-to-back kills from Claire Kovensky and Ford got Arizona State within one, down 18-17, before Washington went on a 4-0 run to extend the lead up to 22-17. The home team would close it out, taking the set 25-20.
The two teams kept it close to start the second set, trading points up until they were tied at 6-6. From there, the Sun Devils went on a 5-1 run to get their lead up to 10-7. Ford powered ASU to four points in a row, earning a kill and an ace in that span, to get the lead up to 17-10. The Sun Devils led by as much as eight points and got up to 23-15 before the Huskies started to inch their way back into it. The home team went on a 4-1 run to cut the lead down to four, but Ford earned two-straight kills to win the set, 25-18.
Arizona State carried the momentum into the third set, pushing an early 13-5 lead. However, Washington caught fire, going on a 9-2 run to get within one point, down 15-14. Kills from Carmen Unzue and Kovensky kept the Dawgs at bay, but the home team eventually took the lead at 18-17. Ford notched two kills in a row to tie it before Ivana Jeremic's kill gave them the 22-21 advantage. It took extra points to decide a winner, but ultimately Washington completed the comeback, winning 29-27.
The fourth set was controlled start to finish by the Huskies. Despite a hard-fought third set, the Sun Devils dropped the final set, 25-4.
