AUSTIN, Texas – David Hoffer and Ashley McCool each made their second-straight finals while Frida Kaellgren made her first appearance of the Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational on day two of the prestigious event. Kaellgren and McCool represented the Sun Devils in the one-meter springboard while Hoffer competed for ASU in the three-meter.
Action Thursday morning kicked off with the women's one-meter event, as the Sun Devils again sent the trio of McCool, Kaellgren and Sarah Bathe to the springboard.
Both McCool and Kaellgren put up respectable numbers in the preliminary, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, to earn a spot in the finals later that evening. Bathe earned a score of 218.25 to place 28th in the event.
The men's three-meter springboard preliminary round followed soon after, with Hoffer showcasing his talent in the morning.
The redshirt senior put up a score of 385.05 to place fourth, while Youssef Selim was left out of the finals by less than a point, finishing 9th. Brandon Spencer rounded out the Sun Devils, contributing a career-high 280.45 points to place 20th.
Competing alongside four other 2017-18 All-Americans of the eight total competitors, Kaellgren and McCool took to the springboard later that night. With one of the more difficult sets among the women, McCool found herself in third place halfway through after nailing her 203B to earn a pair of 7.5's and an eight from the judges.
Kaellgren got off to a slow start, but picked up the tempo with three dives left, the most difficult dive in her set. She finished the night with 305.25 points to finish in fourth while McCool earned 292.20 points to place seventh.
Hoffer took the stage next, beginning with a solid start to the finals. Like McCool, he found himself in third place halfway through, consistently earning scores above seven from the judges. Holding onto third place heading into his final dive, faulty footing caused an abnormal hurdle. Hoffer attempted to correct himself, but totaled 351.90 points after the dive to take seventh place.
The Texas Hall of Fame Diving Invitational finishes up tomorrow with the platform event. Preliminaries are set for 8 a.m. MST, and fans can follow live stats linked above or follow @ASUSwimDive to keep up with the action.
