AUSTIN, Texas – Three Sun Devils placed in the top eight of their event – including a fifth place finish by Ashley McCool – on day one of the Texas Diving Invitational.
 
The invite featured a morning-preliminary, evening-final format, with the top eight in the preliminary round making It to the finals. Three Sun Devils in McCool, Youssef Selim and David Hoffer found themselves competing among the best this evening in Austin.
 
Day one kicked off bright and early with the women's 3M springboard event. McCool put up a respectable score of 308.10 to take fifth place while Frida Kaellgren notched a score of 276.80. Sarah Bathe rounded out the competition for ASU in her first collegiate action this season, placing 26th with a score of 236.75.
 
Selim was the highest finisher in the preliminary round on the men's side in the 1M board, earning a score of 322.35 to take sixth place and secure a spot in the finals. Hoffer was just a single point behind, taking seventh with a score of 321.00, a season-high for the redshirt senior in the 1M. Freshman Brandon Spencer placed 23rd among some of the top diving talent in the NCAA, reaching a score of 253.85.
 
McCool returned to the board this evening with her work cut out for her with a fairly difficult set of dives to accomplish and three All-Americans in the finals with her, including the 3M National Champion. The Canadian stepped onto the board and competed, placing fifth overall with a career-high score of 331.60. McCool also notched two 8.0's from judges on her most difficult dive, the 5152B.
 
Rounding out day one were the men's 1M finals, with Selim and Hoffer placing seventh and eighth, respectively. Both men notched season-high scores in the finals, with Selim earning a score of 355.55 and Hoffer 329.20.
 
Sun Devil Diving is back in action tomorrow morning, with the preliminaries for the women's 1M set for 9 a.m. MST and the men's 3M springboard to follow. Sun Devil Swimming is also set to begin the Indiana Invitational tomorrow as well, with session one set to begin at 8 a.m. MST.
