TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 2018 Sun Devil Lacrosse Maroon and Gold Scrimmage was highly competitive with improved depth on display for both sides, but the Gold team eventually held off a ferocious Maroon comeback for a narrow 13-11 victory Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.

"Both teams showed great effort on the field, which culminated in a close game," Coach Courtney Martinez Connor commented. "It was our first full game with officials and the length of the game effected both teams with only having a few subs. It was tiring at times, but the girls persevered, which is always good."

There were plenty of goals to go around, with 13 different Sun Devils recording at least one during the match-up. The teams proved to be extremely competitive, with Maroon leading in shots (32-31), while Gold took the advantage in draw controls (14-12).

The Gold team was led in scoring by attacker Taylor Carson, who scored a team-high four goals. Gold goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau, who started all 18 contests for the Sun Devils a season ago, looked sharp in the crease for the Gold team. The junior stopped 14 shots, including a couple spectacular saves on Free Position Attempts. Freshman Paige McGlothlin put together an impressive performance, building off a strong showing in the fall by recording the second of two hat tricks for the Gold side. Attacker Carley Adams and midfielder Maria Villanti joined Carson and McGlothlin in putting together a multi-goal performance. McGlothlin showed her versatility, as she caused three Maroon turnovers in the effort.

Newcomer Katie Brodsky was efficient and productive offensively for the Maroon team, scoring four goals on six shots attempted. Fellow freshman freshman Kaylon Buckner also recorded a multi-goal performance. The defensive unit worked as a team, as eight different Maroon  players caused at least one Gold turnover each.  Sophomore Sophia Thomas and junior Campbell Poe split time at goalkeeper for the Maroon team, with Thomas leading the way with seven saves while Poe added three.

"I saw a lot of good offensive plays, starting with fast breaks and settled offense, all the way to man and zone defense," Coach Martinez Connor added. "I think each team was able to practice in a game situation a lot of different options that we are going to see this Spring."

Coach Martinez Connor was pleased with the intensity and the way her team competed, despite scrimmaging against teammates. "We saw how it played out against tough competition in ourselves, which was nice to see." She also reflected on what she deemed a successful fall; "Super proud of the team and how far they have come this fall. Still excited for more growth before the Spring."
