TEMPE, Ariz./KALMAR, Sweden – The two-time reigning national champion Sun Devil triathlon team was split to start the season, with the majority of the team at the 9/11 Heroes Run 5K in Tempe while Katie Gorczyca represented the United States at the World University Championships in Sweden.
In Tempe, Sun Devils finished first through eighth among women, with all 10 finishing in the top-12 among women. Newcomer Audrey Ernst led the way for ASU, finishing eighth overall with a time of 18.45. Junior Charlotte Ahrens and sophomore Hannah Henry finished ninth and 11th overall, within just 15 seconds of Ernst.
Meanwhile, over 5,000 miles away in Kalmar, Sweden, senior Katie Gorczyca finished 26th overall in the Elite Women's race while representing the U.S. at the FISU World University Championships. She finished the triathlon in just over an hour (1:00.19) with a 9:59 swim, 31:04 bike, and 17:55 run. In the inaugural mixed relay race, she and Team USA finished fourth overall.
The Sun Devils have just over two weeks before they're next in action, competing in Watauga, Tenn. at their first of three regional qualifiers (Central) on Sunday, Sept. 16. At the same time (Sept. 14-16), Hannah Henry (Canada) and Audrey Ernst (United States) will be competing at the ITU World Championships at Gold Coast, Australia in the Junior Elite division.
